Is Phantom of the Opera Halloween-worthy? A madman in a mask hiding in the catacombs under the Paris Opera seems plenty Halloweenish to me. And the novel is a gothic horror classic, even if some of the film versions have blunted it with their more prosaic takes on the Phantom. Fortunately, Andrew Lloyd-Webber stuck to the source and his own romantic-gothic inclinations for his stage version.

The original single of the title song, featuring Sarah Brightman (then Lloyd-Webber's wife) and rocker Steve Harley (who was replaced in the actual stage show by Michael Crawford).

And probably my favourite song from the show, this time with Crawford.

This one from Phantom seems on point....

It happens after the loving and a small fraction falls into a thoughtful mood about which I will not even attempt to venture ...

What better music for Halloween than classic heavy metal? Lita Ford is one of the original metal queens*, starting her career with The Runaways in 1975 (at 17, she started learning guitar after hearing Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore when she was 11), then going solo when that legendary band broke up. She took a break in the late 90s and early 00s to raise a family, but came back in 2008 and has been rocking on ever since. Her latest is titled "Dracula" so I figure it belongs here.

*The only female metal star I can think of who'd be a similar vintage is the equally legendary Doro Pesch, who started her career in 1982 and has a new album out in December.

Lake Street Dive have a longstanding tradition of doing a cover in costume on Halloween. This year, they recreate a scene from Sister Act, singing "Hail Holy Queen". They shot while on tour in the UK so it was shot in Albert Hall in Manchester with their crew as additional cast. Great, silly video as usual.

Halocene are celebrating at a haunted house in Nashville with a cover of "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween" by Muse. Guitarist-vocalist Brad Amick takes lead here on both clean vocals and some of his incredible screams (the band normally do metalcore). No sign of female vocalist Rosie Mac in the video, though it sounds like she contributed some backing vocals.
