Snoopy has been enjoying reading and meditating on Genesis 1. What's not to like? It's an action packed story of God creating the world in six days. It brings to mind some awesome images.

Who knew that in the beginning the earth was dark and watery? God is one powerful dude. He says let there be light and snap! We have light.

Now, Snoopy suspects the authors of Genesis had never heard of the solar system but who cares? God creates a beautiful, peaceful world and dreams of vegetarianism for all.

God creates a male and a female person at the end of day six. God blesses them and gives them dominion over the earth.

So nice to read about!

By the way, Snoopy has noticed nothing is said about removal of a rib in Genesis 1. Stay tuned! We will get to that tomorrow in Genesis 2.

Yes, Snoopy plans to read a chapter of Genesis each day.
 
Genesis 1 is one of the chapters where I actually enjoy reading the old KJV translation. The poetic language it uses for the creation is a real joy to read aloud. Modern prose translations like the NET and NRSV just don't give the moment of creation the same import or something. It's the one I would picture your pal Linus reading, lets put it that way. It is a very powerful creation myth, one of my favourites of that genre, actually.

And the webcomic Cyanide & Happiness did a humourous take on the rib thing recently that isn't as crude as some of their stuff so maybe I'll dig it up when you get there.
 
Making something out of nothing is a powerful theme. And it's pretty much what we do when we go forth and multiply. :nerd:

And God rested on the seventh day. This is our first clue that God expects something of human beings. God will later ask them to do the same.

Despite the majesty of the first creation myth, apparently it didn't explain enough. Genesis 2 gives us another version of the story.

The man and the woman are crafted separately this time. The man, now called Adam, comes first. God makes him from the soil and breathes life into him. Later the woman will be created from the side of the man's body. Thankfully, God arranges for him to sleep through this process.

God also creates an orchard in Eden where the people are to reside. God plants the tree of life here. He also plants the tree of knowledge of good and evil and forbids the people to eat from it.

What's up with this? Why is God acting like a trickster? Snoopy is reminded of his cousin the coyote who shows up in indigenous mythology.

Or, God is acting like God is completely unaware of the essential character of God's own creation.

Put something in the middle of a room. Tell humans not to touch it. Leave room. There's a total inevitability about the result.
 
Snoopy thinks God is leading those human beings into temptation. There will be both positive and negative consequences if they eat the forbidden fruit.
 
Imagine if they initiated a knowing process ... contrary to the initial intent or plot! Could we remain with an absence of psyche ... a great empty space?

You placed a temptation that I couldn't resist ... but I 'm not allowed to say why ... knowledge is for bode ... I have been labelled stupid so obviously I know nothing ... an extensive accomplishment that requires projection into the objective image ... a binary item of contention! Maybe bifurcated in some dreams ...

Please stop posting in this style. We have requested language that can be clearly understood by Snoopy's dear readers.
 
I actually find the reversal of the Creation interesting. Man comes first, then the rest of nature seems to have been created as part of providing company for man. It's a much more humancentric view of Creation than Genesis 1, where man comes at the end. 1 is actually much closer to modern cosmology in that it puts humanity as part of a much bigger picture but not, perhaps, as the focus of it. 2, on the other hand, puts humanity at the centre by having the rest of life appear about the first man. That might be why I remain fond of 1 but rather meh on 2, though from a mythological standpoint, 2 is actually packed with meaning (esp. once you add in 3).

It's P3/Snoopy's forum. Only she can post new threads, but the rest of us can reply to her threads. I thought I made that clear in the announcement in News & Business but I'll check and edit if needed.
