Freed from the Prosperity Gospel

Reading this article moved me to tears of joy. It's the story of Costi Hinn's being set free from the prosperity gospel of his uncle Benny...

Benny Hinn Is My Uncle, but Prosperity Preaching Isn’t for Me

Would it be inappropriate to say a loud "Amen" here? His description of life inside the Hinn machine is almost chilling, esp. the bit about loyalty. That is as far from what Jesus set out to do with the apostles as you can get, IMHO. Glad to see someone in the family got the memo and found their way into another, more faithful (IMHO), ministry.

I found it interesting that his wife was instrumental in showing him that what he was preaching didn't line up with what's in the Bible. I know I've learned a lot from Yobo about faith and doing life well.

Significant others tend to do that to you. I first learned about UU'ism from Mrs. M. Her thesis supervisor was a member and former president of the fellowship I eventually joined. And Mrs. M attended the UU church in Halifax while she was living there.

I don't like getting shoved down by my forehead.

A friend of mine was actually at a charismatic church once and had that done to him. I asked him how authentic it was. He replied that he had just kind of gone along with it.

I don't think I could cope with several things at this sort of 'event'. Being 'man-handled' is part of it (I like yoga instructors who wait for clear consent before touching me!), the sorta over-wrought emotionality would be another.

Some people are just more emotional when worshipping than are others. My church encourages people to emote if they want to, or refrain from doing so as they like. Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle - I will sometimes raise hands, dance, clap and weep.

Ha!
At my church during the 80's
The assemby was pentecostal and spoke in tongues.
We had a new visitor freak out when they laid hands and started praying in tongues during alter call at the end of the service. He started yelling "Hey, none of that yabba dabba stuff I don' mind you praying for me n'all but none of that yabba dabba do stuff"!!! LOL!!!

One of the problems I find with UU and even UCCan worship is it is too structured and rational. I'd love to see more dancing in the aisles, hands raised in praise (of whatever), enthusiastic singing, weeping or shouts of joy (as appropriate), and so on. However, I also think those sorts of reactions are naturally going to happen more in churches that have a more emotional approach to faith, like the Pentecostals that @Bolt_upright talks about. When you are very concerned about a rational, thoughtful approach to faith (which is a bit of an oxymoron since faith itself is not rational), you are probably going to reign in very emotional expressions of faith.

It's not that I don't believe that the gift of tongues is for real, I just don't think it is at best little of it could be the real thing or perhaps none at all today unless it proves beneficial to the body as a whole.

I feel the gift still exists. That said, I disagree with those who claim that it is a gift given to all Christians.

Like if your pastor just up and lifts his hands up and says to all, "let us all start speaking in tongues," one would have to question the authenticity.
Like what happened to me at the same church.

I would. I believe tongues, like every other spiritual gift, is to be exercised in good order. For one thing, there should be soneone present and ministering who has the gift of interpretation of tongues.

Tongues and poesy are a great place to hide things of light nature that others don't wish to know under rules of blindness ...

Give them their sense of individual separation ...

Would some loving understanding be prerequisite? Not among hostile Christians soldiering on ... seeking control ...

The humble sink partisan lye into the dark shadows of great mounds of word ...

Get one of the many good books of learning ...

Not me. No way. I will speak when the Spirit Most High gives utterance for me to speak.
Otherwise I speak English only.

Er... not sure where the, "Not me. No way." comes from Bolt.

I agree with you that yielding to the Spirit is the way to go.
