People feel like everyday language is getting politicized in ways that make normal conversation more complicated. To most people, "woke" primarily meant the past tense of "wake up. The thing is, when a word develops a specific cultural or political meaning, especially one tied to serious social issues, as Luce was suggesting in his op. It can become a point of sensitivity or misunderstanding when used in it true context. The vernacular term “woke”comes from the Black civil rights movement in the US and is about being aware of social injustice. But there’s also a battle between those who want to say there never was any injustice in America, it’s overblown, and those who call themselves woke without understanding the issues, and those who distract from the real injustices by getting severely hung up on and angry with every single well intended poor choice of words their grandmother uses.
When My brother years ago. Being ever so serious first used the word to me and said "I'm Woke. " I laughed smiled and said "So am I! Else I'd be lying down there snoring." Which put him in a huff. lol. I had no idea what he was suggesting.
