Welcome to Wondercafe2!

A community where we discuss, share, and have some fun together. Join today and become a part of it!

I think it is a sign of great respect and willingness to put your life in hold for the church.
It isn't an election or a popularity vote...and so, i hope if asked to put name forth it would be reflected upon, sought advice on, and then, should it seem right, let it stand.
Indeed pinga. The fact that 12 people accepted nomination this year is a testament to the strength and depth of leadership available ... I anticipate they will continue to work in many capacities for our church.

loved this little vid about the cookie ladies! They are doing such an amazing job of keeping us all fed!

Kitchen party tonight was fun - lots of food - mussels = yum! Some traditional NL drinks (non alc!) and foods to taste; good music; fellowship.

Quote of the day - which I heard was attributed to former moderator Lois Wilson while riding the merry go round at the carnival set up adjacent to our site - "this is just like the church - up & down, round & round, no known destination!"

Oh - and Corner Brook is under a 'boil water' advisory today - expected to last through Monday; apparently overload of chlorine in the water - which is much much better than bacteria!

So happy to hear that Rev. Jordan Cantwell is our new Moderator. I liked her off the top after she presented herself to GC42.
I expect that the Spirit was in the wind today. It has seemed to me that She helps pick the person. Yet the human aspect gets in there too. We have a lot of work and discerning ahead. Jordan has a good outlook and knows there is much grief involved in change. That has to be acknowledged & celebrated to go on. All grief not felt sits around inside and can do a fair bit of damage

Gary keeps reminding people that they will need to find supporting people to bring home the changes. In any fired up group it's easier but at home... like Jesus, the fire is yours. Passing it on will require real engagement, listening, and tweaking. Within the scope of
acceptance, Prayer, listening, prayer, etc. It can't be done all at once so planning steps toward....you know this no doubt.

I'm excited and carry some dread also. But still looking toward a goodly God change attitude we can example and build.
The live stream is great.

Carolla.... are you wearing anything to signify your into Wonder Café 2? I see on the UCC site...Google page only references to Wonder Café. ... the older version.

Peace be .....

@ Spirit Wind 7 - one day I wore my WC T-shirt & added 2 to the URL on the back of the shirt. We have a small sign & a bowl of business cards with our URL on EDGE's display table. We've been personally handing out some cards, and have put some around the university on bulletin boards when we walk by. I also left some at the student's table (M DIV group from Emmanuel) on the arena floor. We'll have lots left - might be able to send batches out to those who want some - will figure that out in September.

Congratulations and best wishes to the UCCan crowd on WC2. I did a quick read up on Rev. Cantwell and she sounds like she should be a good moderator.

And thanks to @Carolla for getting the word out about WC2!

Thank you for doing that, Carolla. Yes, we need to update some areas of the church's website. You Tube had nothing about Wonder Café 2... it keeps referring to the first one.

I have wondered why they are not simply being inclusive of First Nations in all aspects of decisions. The 'how' can be worked out at the grass roots. It seems we are saying but not writing it in, so it will be done. That is speak but not meaning it.

Peace be ....

WC2 is likely not mentionned/present because we are now independent of the UCC.

Then how are we connected? Are we like The Observer? Funding sources are?

Curious ... in peace

We get no funds from UCCan and entirely self-governed. The only connections remaining is a liaison between them and our council (Aaron McGallegos, who was the admin on the old WC), permission to use the WC name, and a redirect link to us from the old WC. Our funds are all donations from members. There's a thread on the finances in the Council News & Business forum. We entirely separate from them and it says so in WC2's footer:

The original site www.wondercafe.ca was sponsored by the United Church of Canada; however, wondercafe2 has no official affiliation with it or any other denomination.

This UCCan Talk forum exists because so many of the membership are from the UCCan but it is in no way official, just a place for the UCCan folks to discuss their denominations affairs.

Just watched closing worship and felt overwhelmed with emotion.....joy, gratitude, excitement, relief and hope. I took a chance and phoned busydaughter on her cell phone, but as I suspected she wasn't able to answer. Then seconds later the phone rang and I heard her excited voice on the other end....and the voices of Rev John, Carolla and Birthstone!!! They were all together! The worship service was over and I could hear the celebration in the background. Busydaughter is now heading off to the Youth Forum closing worship. It will be an exciting and emotional night for her. I know I have said it before, and I will say it again, I am so grateful to wondercafe friends for continued friendship and support over the years. To know that my daughter was with friends through this journey has been so comforting. Safe travels home all. Thanks for your good work this week. Peace, blessings and a hug.

I also was watching the closing service and...though I don't like the word...installing' the new Moderator.
It was a deep moving living thing that was going on. It was being passed in the bread & wine to the Commissioners to take
and spread where they are going... home. To the commissioners young and older.... God speed in your journey back home.

May the Spirit give way in your life, all over again. "For Behold I make all things new." Present tense... always. It's never over
it's on the journey we meet and become known to each other.
May the church at home be ready....for the Spirit is flying seeking us out for the sheer love of loving us..

To the commissioners young and older.... God speed in your journey back home.
Thank you! Miigwetch! Merci! .. Rest well.

Yesterday was a grueling long event - we were down early for breakfast & started the business of the day at 8:00am. We had two one hour meal breaks. Worship wrapped up last night after 11:00p.m. - and then of course we had to visit the pub for one last time to celebrate! I truly admire the work of Nora & Gary in their sustained effort to manage the debate & processes with such intelligence and grace. We on the floor could get up for a stretch, or a walk, or to refill or mugs, get some of the delicious home baking etc. - shake off fatigue and stretch tired muscles. They did not have these luxuries & maintaining such sharp concentration for endless patient hours - must have been exhausting although they did not show it.

Thank you Carolla for this thread. We have had two e-mails in Calgary Presbytery related to the decision to disinvest in fossil fuel companies. I thought the decision felt like a reaction rather than a thoughtful response to the complex issues involved. It is similar to prejudiced behaviour directed at individuals who belong to identifiable groups because of the actions of a few or the overall disruption to society caused by that group. I see the fossil fuel industry as a sunset industry, but the focus on climate change is taking attention away from other environmental issues.

hi jimkenney12 - nice to see you again. I wasn't in the commission that dealt with that divestment issue, so can't really shed any further light on it. It is indeed complex, as many of these issues in front of us are. I was impressed by a person who raised to the full council the need for sensitive consideration of those whose lives are directly impacted by such decisions, due to their involvement in the industry. So many folk right here here in NL work in the oil patches of Alberta, or the offshore rigs.

There was a truly holy moment last evening during worship - as symbols were presented to our new moderator as part of the covenanting. Two hereditary chiefs made formal presentation of a beautiful carved 'talking stick' - and one also gifted her with his own eagle clan vest, decorated with abalone shells. I learned later, this was not expected - rather a very personal gesture. As he spoke, then removed his vest and helped her to don it, Spirit was so very present. Many tears were shed, as people were so moved to be present in this moment of enormous generosity and reconciliation.

Did you get to bring our flag home?

Thank you for this thread. I hope many come to share their real life experiences. Thanks again.

There were various efforts to list all those groups who needed noting; til eventually one of our 'intercultural observers' (Rev. Danielle - from 'You just never know's' church in Calgary) - offered better all-inclusive wording to the effect that all committees, meetings, deliberations etc. will work from an intercultural lens perspective - there's a list of questions & concerns - re who is missing from the table, who else needs to consulted, etc. etc. - rather than specifically listing groups - a process with inevitably misses some in the naming. Intercultural not referring to ethnic cultures, but all groups such as LGBTQ, those with disabilities, Francophones, etc. etc.
