chansen, I'm not joking when I talk about the god gene. And it's not left brain or right brain (although I graduated with an English degree I started in biophysics, then geography, then economics, in the process accumulating enough credits for several degrees had I maintained any degree of focus). And it can arise in strange people, like the child of two determined atheists. And neither of my sisters, despite all my church-dragging, have any interest in any sort of religion.

I found a community of people who care about others. Also, they are very good people who inspire me to improve my attitude, which largely needs it. I do tend to frighten small chlldren.
I can believe a "god gene" exists. Some people just want or need to believe in something higher. Many also benefit from the community aspect of church, which I've often lauded as a positive contribution of religion that atheism sucks at. No one gathers over shared disbeliefs.

I react badly to those who insist they have the answer for everyone. Bonus ire toward those who use threats. Those idiots can get bent.

Thus the anxiety of that stretch to get something else ... it cannot be defined because of the Long Black Robes ... they can sweap you away like a wayward wind ... Ba Scare Ville ... soul is a thing of paranoia!

This coming Sunday, we'll visiT a Baptist church that has a Presbyterian pastor
Interesting. I could see a Presbyterian ministering to something like one of the United(ing) churches or maybe Methodists (hell, even UU) but a Presbyterian ministering to Baptists is an interesting choice by both.

The most interesting crossover I ever heard of was a UU church in the US calling a woman trained as a Reform rabbi. It was a good choice in some ways, but odd in others given UU'ism is still somewhat rooted in Protestant Christianity so most ministers who aren't UU trained come from a Protestant background.

I think there's something there that inclines some people towards religion (not necessarily God per se, but belief in something more than we experience through the senses), for sure. But it would be hard to separate from upbringing in a lot of cases. I mean, maybe my spiritual inclination is genetic given my family tree (even back before Grandad, his grandfather or someone like that was a Methodist circuit rider back in Wales) but I also grew up in a household steeped in liberal mainstream Christianity so there's definitely a component of upbringing there. I might have been quite different spiritually if I had grown up in a different environment (e.g. my grandchildren will likely be raised in Islam so even if they inherit a "god gene" from me, they will express it very differently).
What do you see as the difference between progressive and liberal?
For my part, liberal is Grandad. Very well-educated in the Christian faith (an earned doctorate in theology) but also strongly rooted in Reform theology. Not a literalist for sure (he read Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time unironically and without finding it problematic) and open-minded on social issues (he actually spoke against banning gay ordination in a letter to The Observer), but definitely a believer in a Trinitarian God, the divinity of Jesus Christ, salvation through his death and resurrection, and scripture as revelation in a fairly traditional way.

Progressive is me in my late Christian period (late teens-early twenties). Seriously examining alternative understandings of God (e.g. process) and questioning the whole idea of God, taking ideas and influences from other faith and philosophical traditions, not a believer (at least not a literal one) in traditional ideas like the Trinity or atonement, sees scripture as a human document recording human experiences that we can learn from in our own journey but anything but inerrant or infallible, Jesus as a human prophet/teacher, stories like the Virgin Birth and Resurrection as mythological.

That should split some visions of all inclusive ... as the intelligence slides away from full blown desires in another ... to give up thought processes ... of improving the entire system ... thus Judy She Aryans ...

There are signs and symbols ... bitch lizards? In the far East a Dragon Queen ... not gentle ... no fluff ... stoned passions!

Oddly, I found it pretty interesting which is why I posted it. Did you actually think I would post it if I hadn't watched it myself? I know she's not singing your tune but that's no reason to just dismiss what she has to say. Then again, dismissing people who don't sing your tune is kind of your MO so, yeah.

That's not just a coping strategy. By telling everyone still there that those who left never really belonged, you place an additional barrier on those who are considering leaving.

It's just manipulation. It's immoral. You belong to a cult.

Yes, it'll be interesting to see how that works. The biggest difference between Presbyterianism and the Baptist church, from what I know, is the handling of the sacraments/ordinances. Also, Presbyterian churches are usually elder-lec with committee upon committee whereas Baptist churches are very Pastor lead. At least in my experience.

In what ways was it a good choice for them?

There def might me something in that. My fam have long been believers in this or that. My mom's parents were UCCanada or Presbyterian. My dad's parents were Catholic. Mom and Dad had us in the UCCanada from an early age, most of us till our teens. Today, two of my sister's are still in UCCanada congregations. My third sister goes to a megachurch in Texas. My brother left religion but even he says he's agnostic rather than atheist, so some god gene sliver remains.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on liberal/progressive. Liberal def sounds like the UCCanada churches I've been part of

Why are you laughing? I mean really. The Christian belief's that it's only by God's grace that we're saved.

Calling her PRETEND doesn’t mean she wasn’t sincere in her own mind. Many people faithfully do church yet remain unconverted. I should know. I was one of them. I went to church, helped to lead Bible studies, and sang in choirs. And I was fully convinced at the time that I was a Christian.

Instead of just mocking the lady, let's learn from her story

Realize why the integral thing (god-collective) put us in this bad position? The way out being mysterious ... very obscure and dark ... fear of knowing expanded matter? There's a stretch ...

Instead of just mocking the lady, let's learn from her story
Her story is she thought she was a Christ--ian and then turned from it ----but she really wasn't ever a Christ--ian to begin with ----so she never turned from being a Christ---ian ===cause she was never in the Fold to begin with ----

The word Christian was a man made term used by the Gentiles to Mock True Believers in the New Testament and Paul --keep the Name Describing True Believers ---not Unbelievers -----

This Term is misused and abused by many ---many ---many people today who in my opinion use the Term to make themselves feel Good by saying ----I'm A Christian -----well with out Jesus your not a True Christian ----Your a False Christian ----

Christ ---is in the word Christian for a reason ----

AND That Is The Truth------

If they are not a True Christ--ian and Mock Jesus and Reject Him ----why do they want to use a Term with Christ in it ---cause they are MOCKING Christ ------

Blows My Mind ------

What you think there Jaebius ---is just your own opinion ---and you are entitled to it ----just Like I am entitled to mine ----and what I posted is my personal Opinion and I stand by it -----LOL

We agree to disagree

Some folk have really powerful opinions that cause them to ignore everything else as a useless opinion ... little creep or flow as the water of the ineffable ...

Here is on for you all ----Won't hold my breath as to anyone one watching it though ----

From Atheist to Believer in Jesus // Lukas's Story // A "Wreck the Roof" Story

A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to interview Lukas, an atheist who came face to face with Jesus after attending church with his wife. This is an incredible story with the power, love, and grace of God on full display.

Well as it turns out, Luka was never an A-theist in the first place. He was never one of us. He only claimed to be an A-theist but was never truly in the fold.

If you insist the word CHRISTIAN's invalid, unsafe, you’re actually undermining the gospel's clarity.

Language matters. If we abandon biblical terms because unbelievers misuse them, we’ll just end up with endless word games.

The solution’s to reclaim the word CHRISTIAN with precision.

Acts 11:26 shows CHRISTIAN's biblical. Perseverance of the saints explains why false converts fall away! 1 PET 4:16 PROVES BELIEVERS MUST GLORY IN THE NAME CHRISTIAN
