Certainly, variations in practice and belief happened fairly early. A lot of Paul's letters are addressing issues where a congregations had "drifted" or adopted what he saw as incorrect practices or ideas. I am not sure denominations would be the correct term, though. The church was fairly loosely organized at this point and things like Gnosticism (modern term, not what they called themselves) were philosophical movements that weren't really organized in the way a denomination is today. You would have like-minded churches corresponding or sharing texts, but rarely any real structure to it. At least that's my sense from the reading I have done. As time wore on, and people like Paul started developing a leadership structure for the church (which you can see in some of the letters), then in a more structured church, denominations would become possible.Now I thought there were many "denominations" in the early "churches", (I'm assuming like today?),so how would we know if there was only one way to do church that was acceptable?
