Yes, the disappearance of small farms which could nicely sustain a family along with multiple thriving businesses in small communities of even 200, had a major effect, but the prime reason for the small business collapse was not just the ability to travel further abroad to shop, but corporations smothering the independents. The more people, be it city or country, stray from semi-self-dependency and into total dependency on corporations to provide even the simplest needs, the greater the threat to individual prosperity.
 
The loss of family farms has greatly altered the area I live in. There are many threads that pulled them down - one being desire for 'modern' life. It became strange to live simply, grow and preserve food, heat with wood,, work and play at home.
People discovered that electricity brought appliances and a bill that required cash. Expectations changed to include conveniences that replaced hard work.

In the 80's a drive from town to out home took us past 18 occupied farm yards. Now there are only 6 - no children - no livestock - a couple of Sale notices up.

If it fails you're out of it ... done gone! Then this systemic theological item that denies logic and all that is Kin ... related matter? Sounds like relativity to me Thomas ... doubts?

That's interesting. I hadn't thought of that. Some years ago we spent a vacation touring Saskatchewan. There were many abandoned grain elevators across the province, located near once thriving communities. We learned that the railroad had ceased to use & maintain the numerous sidings which served the elevators, forcing them into disuse. Small farmers were then required to truck their gain over long distances to the larger communities & elevators, costing them time lost in their fields as well as direct transportation expenses. This became unsustainable for many farmers who then sold their holdings to the larger farm conglomerate. I wish our former member Naaman was here to shed light on this too, as his family farms in SK.
