The Chinese have a similar event and practice. Not sure of the date just now. Ancestor worship, from which practices like this come, is pretty common in Asian cultures.

Never had Korean eel. I have Japanese BBQ eel at our local sushi joint all the time, though. And I have had eel in various forms in China.

Only time I've tasted eel was in a seafood chowder so can't say I really got a "taste" of it.
