Irish rural resistance has long echoed the mule archetype:
  • Donkeys (mule cousins) were once everyday workhorses in pre-mechanization Ireland — hauling turf, plowing small plots, carrying loads across bogs and hills where horses struggled. They symbolized humble, stubborn service amid poverty and landlord exploitation.
