Today we come to a short passage the NET calls The Superiority of the New

The disciples of John and the Pharisees fast but the disciples of Jesus do not. Why is this?

Well, says Jesus, the wedding guests do not fast while the bridegroom is still with them. When the bridegroom is taken, then they will fast.

Jesus also refers to new wine and new wine skins. You don't pour new wine into old wine skins, do you? Or mend old clothing with new, unshrunken cloth?

Is Jesus tossing out old Jewish customs here? Will fasting in the future be limited to times of mourning?

The only fast day mandated by the Torah is Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. Minor fast days were initiated by some of the prophets.

Hmmm ... What do you think Mark is getting at in this passage? There is certainly an element of foreshadowing.

There is certainly an element of foreshadowing.
You are right here ----it is a foreshadowing of the Old Covenant of the laws being of no effect and the New Covenant coming in -----and it is a Message of how God Dislikes mixtures and the effects of mixing the Old with the New ---

Fasting under the Old Covenant was done to get God to move in a persons life or to move on situations that threatened destruction etc ---

Read all ===I just posed this -----

OTHER FASTS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT...
-- People often fasted without specific commandment in time of distress; some were communal affairs while others were acts of the private individual

THEY FASTED IN WAR, OR AT THE THREAT OF IT
THEY FASTED WHEN LOVED ONES WERE SICK
THEY FASTED WHEN LOVED ONES DIED
THEY FASTED WHEN THEY SOUGHT GOD'S FORGIVENESS
THEY FASTED WHEN FACED WITH IMPENDING DANGER
THEY SET UP FASTS TO COMMEMORATE CERTAIN CALAMITIES

I say ----The John spoken of here is John the Baptise disciples who fasted ---John was about Repentance so they would have fasted for the forgiveness of their sins in my view --They followed the Pharisees Tradition ???-----

So Fasting all the time was not a required under the law ----as pointed out in post above ---it was a personal decision to fast often ----it was a Tradition that the Pharisees added themselves ---they were famous to adding to God's Laws ----

Luke 18:11-12 AMP

11 The Pharisee stood [ostentatiously] and began praying to himself [in a self-righteous way, saying]: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of men—swindlers, unjust (dishonest), adulterers—or even like this tax collector.

12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’

I say ---OH the Pride of life screaming out here -------in my view ---

Fasting in the New Testament is NOT done to get God to move as God already moved on our behalf ---

I say -------we fast today to subdue the Flesh ---bringing it under control of God's will for us so we can focus on Spiritual matters and cultivate some self control ----

Some say that we fast today be closer to God -----I disagree with this as anyone who has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is as Close to God as they can get --they have God living on the inside of them ---can't get any closer to God than that -----

Jesus tells the Parable of the Bridegroom ---

A wedding is suppose to bring joy and happiness to the table -- -not sorrow --- Jesus is the Bridegroom and His Disciples are the quests ----they are experiencing the joys of the wedding feast -----so fasting would not be appropriate for that time -----

Jesus is teaching that Fasting has its purpose in showing sorrow at the right time but that time had not come yet ----as the Bridegroom was still alive and active doing His Father's work --and when the bridegroom is no longer with His Disciples they will fast in morning for their loss of their Messiah ---
All these Old Laws and Traditions will soon pass away under the New Covenant -----

This last part of the Scripture --don't mix the Old with the New is a metaphor for trying to Mix the Old Covenant with the New Covenant ----- it show what happens to the item when we try to mix the old with the new ---

The old garment----- in my view ---represents the old traditions and rules of the self righteous ways of mankind ----and the New garment represents the true Righteous ways of being Christ centered ----

The Old and New wine skin --in my view --represents again the Old being waxed away and the New coming into play -----the old expectations added and presented by the the Pharisees and scribes ===like fasting often ---not sitting and eating with sinners ---washing your hands before eating ---not healing on the Sabbath etc ----were not spiritually productive in any way and Jesus was not going to fit these preconceived ideas and rituals into His New Ministry ----

This part of the scripture of Mixing the Old with the New indicates how God Perceives Mixtures -----and He does not like Mixing the Old with the New at all -----as a matter of Fact he has a Law about mixing

Deuteronomy 22"9-11 ---Leviticus 19:19 -
---2 Corinthians 6:14-15

Trying to Mix the Old Covenant with the new Covenant is disastrous ---- and should not be done ---God calls this Lukewarmness ----your neither hot or cold about one or the other your in lukewarm territory ---- James calls it Double Minded ---your like the waves tossing you around in the sea ------and -you can't serve 2 masters according to scripture ----

And God makes this clear -----about being in Lukewarm territory

Revelation 3:16
AMP
So because you are lukewarm (spiritually useless), and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth [rejecting you with disgust].

The Greek word for vomit is

Lexical Summary
emeó: To vomit .spue ,spit

1692 eméō – properly, vomit (MM); (figuratively) repulsed, showing utter rejection (desiring total separation); "to reject with extreme disgust"

Topical Lexicon
Meaning and Imagery
The verb translated “vomit” in Revelation 3:16 conveys violent physical expulsion. Scripture adopts this graphic action as a metaphor for God’s intense revulsion toward compromised covenant loyalty. In the one New Testament occurrence, the picture is not mild displeasure but decisive rejection, dramatizing the peril of spiritual mediocrity.

Theological Significance

1. Covenant Disgust: Divine “vomiting” symbolizes God’s intolerance of divided allegiance (Exodus 34:14; James 4:4).

Warnings and Promises

Warning: Persistent lukewarmness risks exclusion from Christ’s purifying presence.

Mark 2:23-28

Jesus advocates for reasonableness when it comes to Sabbath observance. "The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath." (v.27)

Mark continues the theme of the old and the new. Jesus says, "The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." (v.28)

It seems that Jesus is not tossing out the Hebrew Scriptures. Rather he uses them by referring to David and his companions. (v.25-26). And He applies the Law somewhat differently than the Pharisees.

So we see here ---that the Pharisees again cannot get the Spiritual meaning of what the Sabbath was made for -----they are applying their own rules to what they think it means to rest on the Sabbath ----

And they did that in the Talmud -----added a whole list of things that even today the Jewish people are not allow to do on the Sabbath ---which is ridiculous -----

Jesus says to them -----Have you never [even] read what David did when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were accompanying him?—

These Pharisees are teachers of the Law and are suppose to be so schooled in their Scriptures ---but they again show their ignorance of spiritual understanding of what the Scriptures are truly saying -----

Why ---cause their hearts are hardened and their eyes and minds are veiled as to Spiritual understanding of any scripture -----

And that stands for today for all who are without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit ---

Jesus says to the Pharisees

Mark 2:27 ERV

27 Then Jesus said to the Pharisees, “The Sabbath day was made to help people. People were not made to be ruled by the Sabbath.

I say ------The Pharisees made the Sabbath a burden on people ----they made rigid rules and made the people adhere to them ---- when the Sabbath was made for people's well being ----

Again the Pharisees had no understanding of the Spirit of the law of what the Sabbath was really for ---

Jesus really didn't have many positive things to say about the Pharisees -----they didn't practice what they Preached ---they added their own human Laws to God's Laws ----because of their hardened hearts and veiled mind and eyes they were leading their Flock down a wrong road ----they were Prideful and Self Righteous and Jesus was having none of it ---He called them out on every turn --

Jesus is calling a Spade a Spade here ----and He is saying this to His Disciples and the Crowd ---no holding back here Folks ----

I say ------and there should be More like Jesus in our Pulpits today ---calling out the --False Prophets that are Preaching in our Churches today ---Just my view -----

Matthew 23 CEV

Jesus Condemns the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law of Moses

(Mark 12.38-40; Luke 11.37-52; 20.45-47)

23 Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:

2 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses.

3 So obey everything they teach you, but don't do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else.

4 ;They pile heavy burdens on people's shoulders and won't lift a finger to help.

5 Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels

6 They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues.

7 And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers.

8 But none of you should be called a teacher.

All I can says is ----WOW ! -----

This must burst people's bubble when they read this -----as Jesus is seen as this --gentle --kind ---meek and mild --compassionate ---forgiving healer -----No one ever talks about Jesus being a condemner of False Prophets Publicly by calling them out in no uncertain terms in front of a crowd no less --

Pretty harsh calling out here Folks ---- from Jesus Himself

Snoopy has meandered through another healing story. The Pharisees are not pleased and plot to assassinate Him. (Mark 3:1-6).

The crowds continue to form around Jesus and many are healed. Again, the unclean spirits recognize the Son of God. (Mark 3:7-12).

The calling of the twelve Apostles is next. They are given the authority to cast out demons. (Mark 3:13-19).

Jesus will soon begin to teach in parables.

You are right here ----it is a foreshadowing of the Old Covenant of the laws being of no effect and the New Covenant coming in -----and it is a Message of how God Dislikes mixtures and the effects of mixing the Old with the New ---

I would like to remind us once again to resist the temptation to dis Judaism as a religion. A reminder that if you think that Godde negated the "old" covenant, that Godde can just as easily tear up the "new" one.

Even the Roman Catholic Church has come to recognize God's covenant with the Jewish people. So Godde didn't exactly toss it in the garbage.

would like to remind us once again to resist the temptation to dis Judaism as a religion
Judaism is a man made Religion ---ir has nothing to do with God ---God is of no Religion --God made Covenants ---not Religions ------When God makes a New Covenant according to Scripture He Himself makes the Old Covenant Obsolete-----

The Mosaic Covenant was temporary in place till the New Covenant of Grace came into affect -----

Hebrews 8:13 AMP ----Nothing about Judaism here ---just the Covenant ---

Amplified Bible
When God speaks of “A new covenant,” He makes the first one obsolete. And whatever is becoming obsolete (out of use, annulled) and growing old is ready to disappear.

As Far as I know Judaism is still in place and the Jews still follow their Religion of Judaism ---God has nothing to do with their Religion

May I remind people that supersecessionism is anti-Semitic and therefore not in accordance with this site's statement of values? It has been used to justify many generations of Christian attacks on Jews.
God has nothing to do with their Religion
This statement is where you cross a line. Religious Jews of all the various branches of the faith would take issue with this in very strong terms. It essentially denies the validity of their faith in God and the practices supported by that faith. Some in other faiths (esp. but not just Islam) might well say the same about Christianity. "God abandoned the Jews" (which is basically another way of wording what you said) is an anti-Semitic slur. We do not do that here. We respect other's beliefs and faith, even when we do not accept them ourselves.

Mark 3

Healing on the Sabbath --Pharisees again upset and plot to kill Jesus --Jealousy is a very powerful and dangerous emotion ----the Pharisees were very jealous of Jesus ----Cain killed his brother because of jealousy ----and now the Pharisees are plotting to kill Jesus because of jealousy

AI

Yes, the Pharisees were indeed jealous of Jesus. Their jealousy stemmed from Jesus' growing popularity, his teachings that challenged their authority, and the way he associated with those they considered "sinners". This jealousy ultimately led to their opposition and desire to see him crucified.

Jesus becomes more popular -----the evil spirits know and recognize His as the Son of God ----and the Pharisees who should recognize who Jesus is remain in the Dark -----

Jesus stands on a mountain and calls the 12 Disciples He wanted rand they responded ---they came forth -----

The Greek word for Call here in this scripture is

Lexical Summary
proskaleó: To call to oneself, to summon, to invite

Topical Lexicon
Overview of the Verb’s Function
The verb translated “to call to oneself” consistently portrays a deliberate summoning that establishes responsibility between caller and called. Whether the summons issues from the Lord, His apostles, civil magistrates, or believers in practical ministry, the action always carries weight: once a person or group is called, they must face the one who calls and respond.

The Pharisees accuse Jesus of being possessed by Beelzebub ---- so then He starts to speak to them in parables ---Why ---because only those who have their hearts and minds open by God the Father will have the Spiritual understanding of what the Parable is really saying ----

Jesus was told His Mother and brothers were outside ----Jesus says
“Who are My mother and My brothers?”

Looking at the ones sitting around Him ----He says here are My mother and My brothers ----

and Here Jesus makes an offer to anyone to become a member of His Family by doing the Will of God by accepting Jesus through Faith and following Him ------then you are His mother -brother and sister

verse AMP
35 whoever does the will of God [by believing in Me, and following Me], he is My brother and sister and mother.”

I do not think, unsafe, that you have any idea how deeply anti-Semitic your opinions are. You are not the only person to hold these opinions, but they are not only wrong, they are evil.

Gotcha. And the on-going unrecognized anti-Semitism causes me to not to want to participate. Enjoy your conversations.
