There is also a good argument that as a Jew, Jesus would have understood God's direction to enjoy life within the limits of God's commandments.
Sorry a little confused by your statement here ----Jesus would have understood God's direction to enjoy life within the limits of God's commandments.

What limits are you speaking of here of God's commandments --if you could clarify --thank you ----

The dietary laws are a good example but there are others. I would like to avoid a tangent about this please.

I agree that John's Gospel is Spiritual but IMHO it is also contains more than just the Spiritual aspect of who Jesus and the divine is etc ------it shows the side of our Human nature in this world -----it shows the complexity of true believing verses false believing ---it speaks of the importance of being in the community showing Agape ---

Our Human nature is full of doubt --fear and unbelief --and John's gospel shows this quite often in my view ----

John's gospel shows that even seeing the miracles Jesus did many chose to remain in unbelief -----while other chose to believe -----

John's gospel speaks of the importance of mutual love for one another and service for one another ---

Greek word for another ---

In the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, ἀλλήλων is used to convey the importance of mutual love and service. in John 13:34, Jesus commands His disciples, "A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. It is often used in exhortations to love, serve, and support one another within the Christian community.

The dietary laws are a good example but there are others
Thanks for your reply ----so they would find enjoyment in keeping with their traditions which showed their respect for God -----I can understand that -----I think I got it ----

I think AI was programmed by a fundamentalist Christian.
I don't understand the algorithms but I have read that AI uses the material which shows up the most frequently in searches.

The answers you receive probably depend a lot on how you phrase your questions.

Indubitably. YOu can ask for a response from a specific point of view.

I have done this, and definitely have got some different answers than unsafe.
Personally though I'd rather answer these things from my own conclusions and others thoughts rather than AI.

1 John 2:18-29

End times (the last hour) are near, says John. Look at all the antichrists which have been appearing!

These are people who "went out from us" because they not not ever really belong to "us". They deny that Jesus is the Christ. Anyone who denies the Son does not have the Father either. The antichrists are trying to deceive others.

Remain in Him, advises John. Have confidence in Him and do not shrink away in shame when He comes back. If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness has been fathered by Him. (v29)

According to John, there is only one possible way to have eternal life and practice righteousness.

Many Christians believe this to be so today. I was taught a soft version of this theology when I was a child. As a Christian, it was going to be my responsibility to bring others to Christ.

If indeed the same John wrote the Gospel and the Epistles, the guy is highly apocalyptic in addition to holding a high Christology.

Tradition holds he wrote Revelation as well. It seems to me he got more and more extreme in his views.

Straight up teaching here in this that you post ---no sugarcoating ---no going round the mountain ----no fluffy --soft Preaching ---just Calling a Spade A Spade ------John is Telling it like Jesus did ---straight up -----hard preaching ----

You either believe this or you don't ----all up to our free choice ----

According to John, there is only one possible way to have eternal life and practice righteousness.

Many Christians believe this to be so today. I was taught a soft version of this theology
And your not alone ---I to was taught a soft version of this theology as well growing up ---

Jesus is the prince of peace ---Jesus never speaks ill of anyone ----Jesus never gets angry etc --all soft --sugarcoated preaching ----Children carry that picture with them ----believing it

Then we learn the real truth ---Jesus came to divide --Jesus called out the Pharisees actions and theology---and Jesus does get angry ----- Big Shocker --

There are Many --Many Ministers today preaching sugar coated ---going round the mountain --very soft theology to their Church ---which is Bad for the Soul ----

Earlier in this thread we were speculating about John omitting so much of the material that appears in the synoptics. Was it because he assumed his audience already knew those stories?

We need to keep in mind John repeats the narratives he considers important.

I am wondering now if John disliked the more nuanced Jesus. The One who taught in parables and stressed ethics & compassion.

Just pondering this.

So here in this first line ----John says that False teachers represent ---The antichrist -----He speaks here of the last hour which is the 2nd coming of Christ -----

Actually it will be His 3rd coming ---He walked the earth and then was gone ---He will return to Rapture His Saints and be gone --and He will come with His Saints to Defeat Satan and remain with His Saints to set up the New Earth =====and could make it 4 as He appeared to Paul as well

AMP B -----Verse 18 Children, it is the last hour [the end of this age]; and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming [the one who will oppose Christ and attempt to replace Him], even now many antichrists (false teachers) have appeared,

I say -----And there are many Preaching in our present Church age time -----

Lexicon
antichristos: Antichrist

Context: The concept of the antichrist is primarily found in the New Testament writings of John. The term ἀντίχριστος is mentioned explicitly in four verses: 1 John 2:18, 1 John 2:22, 1 John 4:3, and 2 John 1:7. In 1 John 2:18, the apostle warns, "Children, it is the last hour; and just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour." Here, John indicates that the presence of many antichrists is a sign of the end times.

The spirit of the antichrist is further described in 1 John 4:3

2 John 1:7
warns of deceivers who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh: "For many deceivers have gone out into the world, refusing to confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist." This verse underscores the importance of affirming the incarnation of Christ as a fundamental Christian doctrine.

AMP B Verse 19 ---clearly showing the Difference between Spiritually Reborn people from Non Spiritually Reborn people -----

AMP B _-----verse 20 --clearly showing that the Spiritually reborn have the anointing of the Holy Spirit and been set apart and Have the Holy Spirit teaching them the truth and illuminating their minds and guarding them from error -----

verses 21-23 --showing the Spirit of the antichrist -----for those interested

True Christians need to protect themselves from deception ----and they have the anointing abiding in them --who is the Holy Spirit who will teach Believers all things as they remain rooted in Him ----verse 27

AMP ----Verses 28-29 --speak of his 2 coming holding their Faith in Him

28 Now, little children (believers, dear ones), remain in Him [with unwavering faith], so that when He appears [at His return], we may have [perfect] confidence and not be ashamed and shrink away from Him at His coming.

29 If you know that He is absolutely righteous, you know [for certain] that everyone who practices righteousness [doing what is right and conforming to God’s will] has been born of Him.

Respectfully, unsafe, I am interested in your thoughts and ideas, NOT those of AI.

Please respect me by sharing your opinions. We can all google/AI/ask questions. This site was intended for conversation about the opinions of humans. Can we just respect that concept? There's nothing wrong with substantiating your opinions with a quote reference.

Please respect me by sharing your opinions.
I am sharing my Spiritual opinions and those from AI ---so I ask that you respect that --thank you ----- --
Respectfully -----if you don't like what I post there is an ignore button --and if you read my post above Post # 55 I posted nothing from AI ----

The use of AI here on WC2 probably merits wider discussion.

There have been some good points made on this thread by a few posters. Thanks @GordW, @Waterfall, @BetteTheRed and @unsafe

WC2 News & Business would likely be the place for a dedicated thread about this issue.

1 John 3:1-10
John continues his dissertation (I almost said diatribe ) about Christians loving each other.

Now he adds the idea that residing in Jesus means being without sin. And that the purpose of the Son of God is to destroy the devil.

He equates righteousness with loving one's fellow Christians. All others are not of God.

This is not Snoopy's favorite offering from John.

We will deal with the rest of 1 John 3 tomorrow. Snoopy prefers the second part of the chapter.

So here in verse 1 John says

AMP B
3 See what an incredible quality of love the Father has shown to us, that we would [be permitted to] be named and called and counted the children of God! ------

So who is the US --and WE here ---Greek word for US and WE
From Strong's Concordance
Lexicon
hémeis: we, us
The use of ἡμεῖς underscores the relational aspect of the Christian faith, highlighting the interconnectedness of believers as members of the body of Christ.

I say ---Today to be counted as a Child of God is a privilege --God does not give this title to everyone ---you have to be adopted back into God's presents through receiving His Son --

verse 1 continued ------ For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

I say ------this is hard straight up teaching ---now we have free choice to believe that or not ---

Verse 2 AMP
Beloved, we are [even here and] now children of God, and it is not yet made clear what we will be [after His coming]. We know that when He comes and is revealed, we will [as His children] be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is [in all His glory].

I say ----My Spiritual take on this is that this is referring to The Rapture of the Saints ---that His children now have no idea what their new bodies will look like ----all we know is what has been reveled to us in Scripture ---

The reason I say it refers to the Rapture is because when He comes Back to fight Satan ---the Saints come with Him -----

1 Corinthians 15:52
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

Verse 3
3 And everyone who has this hope [confidently placed] in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (holy, undefiled, guiltless).

I say -----this is about Believers having hope and believing that they will be with Jesus for eternity as they pursue living a righteous life by and through the guidance of the indwelling Holy Spirit --

These next verses talk about sin ----and how it dominates our lives being unrestrained as we disobey God's laws and will --but Jesus came to takes our sins and anyone who abides in Jesus now has a resource to stay out of sin -----

Just posting vers 8 AMP B ---as it is ---People either believe it or they don't ---but can't change what it says --Hard teaching here for people to hear -----

8 The one who practices sin [separating himself from God, and offending Him by acts of disobedience, indifference, or rebellion] is of the devil [and takes his inner character and moral values from him, not God]; for the devil has sinned and violated God’s law from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.

My take on -------Verse 9 ---if your reborn Spiritually ---you will not want to sin and will try to stay out of sin as much as possible ---and can call upon God's Grace and the Holy Spirit to help you stay away from sin ----

Footnotes from the AMP B

  1. 1 John 3:9 I.e. in human terms, God’s seed is like a divine “genetic code” which is passed on to His children and produces in them the desire to live in a way which pleases Him.

I say
Just posting verse 10 as it is ---hard teaching for people to hear -----you can either believe it or not ---we have free will on that -----Amp B

10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are clearly identified: anyone who does not practice righteousness [who does not seek God’s will in thought, action, and purpose] is not of God, nor is the one who does not [unselfishly] love his [believing] brother.

Just posting this so all can see what AI says about today's Scripture ---looks like AI has it about right to me anyway ---

AI

John 3:1-10 in 1 John discusses the great love God has shown in calling us His children and the hope of being like Jesus when we see Him. It also emphasizes that those born of God will not continue to sin, and that living a life of righteousness is a sign of being a child of God, while a life of sin is a sign of being a child of the devil.
