I would love to see statistics on how many people would do that. Especially those of us without a purse or handbag (i.e. me when I head down to Argyle to pickup some grub). I haven't used a straw in so long, I almost forget how they work (kidding). Even when we have lunch at Costco, I just sip from the cup and don't bother picking up a straw or lid.

Here, maybe everywhere? the norm has become that the lid on cold beverages from restaurants has a little flap that you fold back to make like a sippy cup - no straw required

Oo, I like that one. Probably where the industry should go here. No straws at all. I'd be down with it.
 
But don't worry. Trump's tariffs on the steel and aluminum industry are the last straw, the straw that broke the camel's back of too passive a Canadian response.

Right, so keep a small quota of plastic straws supplying retirement communities, hospitals and homes that need them. Until such time that paper can last X minutes in water. It's not a difficult solution. A president? Banning paper straws? What a stupid thing for him to concern himself with. It's pandering to asshopes who think plastic straws are a right, with no thought to the damage they cause because the same idiots who want them can't find a garbage can if you swung it at their heads.

Hard to live without plastic isn't it, and yet it's so detrimental to our oceans, wildlife, air and ourselves.
Did they ever come up with a viable idea to break plastic down safely?

Limited. Not all plastic products can be recycled (or can be recycled profitably I am never sure which is the case). ANd nowhere close to everything that is accepted by recycling programs actually gets put into that stream.

Depends what you call recycling....sending it to another country? Burning it.....not advised.
We have recycling but sadly it's been reported from investigative news agencies that many plastic garbage bins reserved for recycling plastic are just dumped into a common pile and not recycled.
