I am sure many here have heard and seen the end of the homily Bishop Budde gave on Monday. I actually encourage folk to listentto the whole thing, not just the end, as the call for unity leads into the plea for mercy.

SOrt of surprised the homily and the reaction to it (like POTUS demanding an apolpgy and various folk insisting that the Bishop should have 'stuck to the Gospel') has yet to bee discussed here.

Anyway, what do folk think? NOt just do you agree/disagree with what was said but was it appropriate in that place and time? Will it have any impression on the public discourse in the nation? Where does prophetic critique belong in the church and in the world at large?
 
The sermon made apt spiritual points, but could have benefited from concrete illustrations.
But its posting here is giggle-worthy. I have often reported vile language and insults to my posts to no avail.
The utter lack of respect, honesty, humility, and pluralistic spirit here is reinforced by a woke majority that drives away most conservatives.
The guidelines are meaningless for an unmoderated board like this one.

For years, I tried to be excruciatingly polite in my posts, only to meet with hostility and insults. So I decided long ago to adopt Jesus' attitude in His many "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees! Hypocrites!" sayings. If the board were humanely moderated and reports were taken seriously, I would go out of my way to post in a polite and tolerant manner. Fortunate4y, I'm not an approvaL seeker and don't care what anyone here thinks of me; and i enjoy the verbal debates and skirmishes with the knowledge that many lurkers read them.
 
Episcopal Bishop, Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde acted with courage & integrity and showed us all what it means to be a Bold Disciple.

I would say, yes, it was an appropriate message, delivered in a calm & sincere voice, at an important time & place. If not then ... when? Will it affect public discourse? In some quarters, perhaps there will be thoughtful reflection & conversation, although I suspect this will be more private than public in the U.S. IMO Trump is a dangerous person & those around him know that agreement & ego stroking is necessary for their own survival. It is a mark of the decline of civilization, as noted repeatedly in world history.

The public discourse in other countries may be quite different. With an election approaching in this country - it is a timely reminder to our own Canadian public & politicians alike.

During the swearing in ceremony, I noticed the RC clergy person who said prayers, spoke several times of extending compassion "to citizens" - citizens, not neighbours or all people. Empire rules.

And rightly so. Jesus' teaching on compassion does not have in mind lawbreakers like illegal aliens who violate laws established for the common good., The greater good is the issue. And "governing authorities" who enforce just laws to protect the border from criminals must be the priority even if most of the lawbreakers are not criminals.
So Ronans 13:1ff. is the applicable biblical text here:

"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.... Whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves."

How convenient for corrupt governments.
 
First, "Ghetto" is an appropriate descriptive for a woke site dominateed by cancel culture and my rhetoric responded to that intolerant culture.
Second, the Mods can call my bluff by actually enforcing the Code of Conduct responding to "reports" of insults and name=calling to see how politely I consistently respond--the polite way I do in daily life.

You're evil. You prey on people. You sell your faith on a pack of lies to the desperate. You're shameless and you deserve the worst fate your fictional God could come up with.

That needs to be made clear. There are people for whom insults are absolutely necessary because normal words are insufficient. You qualify in spades.

As always, you pontificate from total ignorance without evidence precisely because your whole worldview would be shattered if you had to concede that I'm being totally honest about the world of the supernatural in which I, like many Pentecostals, have been privileged to dwell. I believe the same Goo who hears and answers my prayers and the prayers of countless other believers can overcome your resistance like He overcame Paul's resistance while he was arresting and helping stone Christians, I'm looking for God to give you the same self-authenticating experience of His love and presence as God gave Vince, my chansen-like nemesis on another site, with whom I regularly engaged in polemics. In the final analysis it wasn't my arguments that swayed Vince, but a life-changing encounter with Christ in a church service to which his friends invited him. I will be praying that this happens to you.

With abstraction your in the beyond group ... thus resembling an object looking back on the subject ... that over your shoulder sensation! Spooky or a ghastly paranoia ... fear is the key to mental distraction ... oh crap!
 
We need to use some thought and intelligence when dealing with visions. I get them. I see things that aren't there and don't see things that are in front of me. Do I seriously claim them as creations of an invisible god? Nope. They are scientifically proven to be caused by the genetic disease I have in my eyes. I know people who have visions caused by mental illness. Bring on the wisdom to understand what the truth is!
 
I think the more people speak out, it will give strength for others to question and speak out against things that are wrong, so yes Bishop Budde was very appropriate to speak this way during the inauguration IMO.
It rang true and helped diffuse some light through the encroaching darkness.
 
My take is - Well done Bishop. She spoke words that need to be said. Hopefully other people called to preach will follow her example. Sunday should indicate whether other ministers will give similar sermons.

I'm still thinking about her naming of a particular yellow tinged man. Not sure that public scolding of named person is a good thing. Many people are in the wrong around this situation.

The demand for an apology was totally predictable. The person calling for it has frequently demonstrated that he makes no effort to follow Christian teaching (or common decency and manners). Most adults have learned that going to a religious service leads to hearing religiously based words. One isn't forced to attend. Complaining about the words shared seems ignorant, childish and plain silly to me.
 
I disagree with the way she went public with this ----She could have had a Private Conversation about what her concerns were with Trump -----she didn't have to use her Pulpit to say what she did ------but she wasn't long capitalizing on her new found fame going on the media shows to gain her fame for having the balls to Chastise the President of the USA in Public ------it just shows that she had all intentions of getting something out of what she was about to do -----No one publicly knew her before this ---and now she is basking in her new found fame ------which is not laying down Ego but Feeding Ego -----

To me she is not a True Christian ---she is a Wolf in Sheep's clothing -----she has written books and I think she saw this as an opportunity to gain recognition for herself ---so people will flock to her Church and buy her books ---

This is the Problem is all Man Made Religions -----they are just that Man Made amd Man Driven ----God is kept out so that these Religions can Please the People not God with ther own Doctrines -----very Sad

I say -------We are to Agape the Person Not agree with the actions that goes against God's word ----and she spoke of showing Love and Mercy and she showed neither in her Chastisement of Trump in public ----she should have spoken to him privately about this Matter --- in my opinion
