Surge in medically assisted deaths under Canada’s MAID program outpaces every other country - Free Health Care Is not all it is cracked up to be.
Just to clarify, are you still pretending to be an American, or are you Rita again and you have some experience of your own to share?

I mean, I do. If we were American, we'd be broke. Full stop. Carter's injury came just as we were both unemployed and just lost health insurance. We'd be out a kid, a home, and our life savings. But wow, how great it would have been to be living on the streets with a 7-year-old daughter after sinking everything into care for our son. Freedom rocks.

There are always two sides one glowing wealth collectors and then the processers of knowledge ... usually cold in the shadows ... under the wings? Damn ... cursed understanding ...

  • Data shows nearly 75,000 waiting list deaths since 2018-19, covering a wide range of surgical and diagnostic services
  • No government discloses the data publicly despite shaming businesses publicly for mouldy soup cans found during restaurant inspections.
Today, SecondStreet.org released government data showing an additional 15,474 patients in Canada died in 2023-24 before receiving various surgeries or diagnostic scans. However, that number is incomplete, as several governments provide either partial data, or simply do not track the problem.

SecondStreet.org collected the data by filing Freedom of Information (FOI) requests across Canada. When the data collected is extrapolated across jurisdictions which did not provide data, the number actually nearly doubles, to around 28,077. These figures cover everything from cancer treatment and heart operations to cataract surgery and MRI scans.

“Canadians pay really high taxes and yet our health care system is failing when compared to better-performing universal systems in Europe,” said Harrison Fleming, Legislative and Policy Director at SecondStreet.org. “Thousands of Canadians across the country find themselves on waitlists — in some cases for several years -— with too many tragically dying before ever getting treated, or even diagnosed.”

This report examines the data SecondStreet.org gathered from provincial governments and their health authorities, between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024. Highlights from the research include:

  • At least 15,474 patients died in Canada while waiting for surgeries or diagnostic scans. This figure does not include Quebec, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador and most of Manitoba. Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia only provided data on patients who died while waiting for surgeries – not diagnostic scans.
  • If one extrapolates the data provided across provinces and health regions that did not provide data, an estimated 28,077 patients died last year on health care waiting lists.
  • While some response data is vague, SecondStreet.org observed cases where patients died after waiting anywhere from less than a week for treatment to more than 14 years.
  • New data from Ontario Health suggests 378 patients died while waiting for cardiac surgery or a cardiac procedure.
  • Since April 2018, SecondStreet.org has identified a staggering 74,677 cases where Canadians died while waiting for care.
“When a restaurant fails a health inspection, the government shares the news publicly and sometimes notices are posted in the establishment’s windows for everyone to see,” said Colin Craig, SecondStreet.org President. “But, when nearly 75,000 Canadians have died before getting the care they needed, governments don’t proactively disclose anything. Maybe it’s time for governments to hold themselves to the same standard they hold everyone else.”

“This research was inspired by stories like Laura Hillier’s, the 18-year-old Ontario patient that died on a waiting list for cancer treatment,” added Craig. “Governments need to do a better job tracking tragic stories like hers, notifying the public about waiting lists deaths and most importantly, initiating reform to save lives.”

ARe there Issue? sure. Are all of those deaths related to what they were waiting for or are they people who died while on a waiting list for something else? (Probably both but what is the breakdown?)
Surge in medically assisted deaths under Canada’s MAID program outpaces every other country - Free Health Care Is not all it is cracked up to be.
THe cause for the surge (and I agree that MAID has gotten a bit more than was first envisioned by many of us) is not totally clear. Is it pushed as a cost saving? Is it a result of inadequate palliative care (or seen by some as a replacement for palliative care)? Is it an openly free interpretation of the rules, particularly anything around defining imminent death?

Is it the fact that there was a backlog of people wanting it?

Does a backlog of such character cause a stress that causes death wishes? Thus some sleep on it ... and decide it is better beyond our present state as MLK stated there is this dream ... takes us out there ... correct ... beyond corruption and its crushing effect!

Then the ankh enters stage ... as a beef jerk .. red necked? Bull extraction ... B'X'd ... as chi? Asch E was all that remained about the fires ... heated tongues ... kerygma ... does it carrion? With extreme chaos hope diminishes ... powers believe they have order on the spot! All about that is dist raught ... Ra di ante!

Put it together ...

Here is the stunning poll that is relevant to future Canadian attitudes:

"A new Ipsos poll found that four in 10 Canadians age 18 to 34 would vote to be American if citizenship and conversion of assets to U.S. dollars were guaranteed2".

In our mid-20s, my younger brother and I would have neatly slotted ourselves within that 40% of younger Canadians. We both realized it was in our best professional and personal interest to move to the USA and become US citizens. For me, it was a matter of better American universities and college teaching opportunities. For my doctor brother, it was a matter of better medical opportunities with better pay. My brother lives in Colorado Springs in one the prettiest and most diversified areas of the country.
great skiing and hiking area! I live, surrounded by mountains in northeast Washington state in a small city of about 3,500. The climate in both cities is a dramatic upgrade from our prior life in Frigid Winnipeg.

I must confess that I enjoy trolling my Canadian brethren and cistern. It's a way of throwing a bone to my darker shadow self.
Here I usually feel the need to be excruciatingly polite all the time--and I need Wondercafe2 as a fun escape where I get to play the villain.
What I really think is that both countries have their advantages and disadvantages; so it depends on what you're looking for.
I tell my American friends that the best thing about Canada is not their universal health care system, but the fact that they have 3 viable political parties.
The NDP often has a moderating influence of political discourse, making political polarization a less serious problem in Canada than in the USA.
And to be honest, I'd much rather have Trudeau than Biden and Poilievre than Trump! But it's just so much fun defending Trump with all his flaws, foibles and eccentricities. And he just may pay off Greenlanders, despite their coming independence, and gain access to their rich mineral resources for to boost the US economy.

Does this define an un owned understanding of blatant loss of knowledge of onus ... a gift? Thus the given responsibility is prodigal ... gone down the sewer as a joke ... bloody fine eh? Heads up ... said to be a temporal issue ... then the return ... so much chit to be consumed and the materialist keeps on ...

There are myths to go as carrion ... nurse it when it strikes yah ... suck up your foul creations as jokes on hoos naye to yah ... and the injury becomes real!

Incarnates as stupid to me ... but we are directed to avoid and let the corrupt just be ... so it spreads into administering positions that claim commissions for falling short ...

Spontaneous 4 shortening of the little people ... "out of sight" mon! It is the way the support system goes ... eliminated due to hubris ... kerygma as hot winds?

If there is evil among us ... how does this translate into the world of the mindful compared to mindless emotions?

It is said many cannot observe evil and are thus blind tuit ... forget evil do not bother with it and it runs off ... like water off of what?

Happiness was enjoying a Paul Bassett (Australian) latte today instead of a Starbucks (American) one
No. happiness is enjoying a Washington State 20 ounce 4 shot white chocolate mocha with cinnamon and caramel.
when I moved from New York to Washington, I asked what distinguishes Washington. The answer was coffee ships everywhere, 5 within a one block area in the center of town. These have made me a caffeinaholic!

You seem to have missed the point - I'm avoiding things American for the next 4 years. Following that, I'd love to try a Washington State White Chocolate Mocha. Though I can get something quite like it here. South Korea has a greater coffee culture than even Washington. Many blocks in many cities here have five coffee shops. Right near my place there are nine shops that sell coffee, and we live in a residential area

MUcil Age ... tacketh ... not far from tekton ... and ancient expression ... for designer ... and unknown! Deep expression ...

Is Canada in a state of indifference as infects many of the masses? Solidly ... solid ide cares not for essence ... worn as an Eire of flame ... glam and bliss? Bling ...

Some ancient declared care for the neighbor and then some try and filter out the parts ... thus dead neighbour Hoods ... not a que Lue ... about spades and digging ... the world of darkness within ... and Big Bad John to those on the surface ...

Counter to the desires of avarice ... thus divorce from life ... even a court case in Alberta that placed divorce in the line of death! Could the entire state of humanity divorce itself for tits love of high life? Requires simple sate in ... satisfied soul by what was discovered in life ... and then it moved on ... a dream ventured? Ouda 'ere ...
