Snoopy's Snappy Review: Galatians 4

Wow! Paul is so disappointed in these Galatians!

Yours, Snoopy. :dog:

" 13As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you, 14 and even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself. 15Where, then, is your blessing of me now? I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me."

Here we have the 2 leading candidates for Paul's "thorn in the flesh (2 C0inthians 12:7):"
(1) To get to Galatian territory Paul has to cross a malarial mosquito-infested swamp. Once you recover from malaria, s disease that often has relapses after recovery.. So malaria is more likely Paul's "thorn" than epilepsy, for which there is no evidence.
(2) Paul's claim, "you would have torn your eyes out and given them to me," has been construed as an admission that he is vision-impaired, perhaps as a result of the stoning and vicious beatings his persecutors have administered to him. This inference is reinforced by his wry comment in 6:11, ";See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!" Taken by themselves, these 2 comments might be merely figures of speech, but taken together, they seem to indicate a vision problem.

my view
So here in Galatians 4 we again see the shackles that the Law has put upon the Jewish Nation and the Freedom that The New Covenant brings in for all people who want to receive it ----and become Adopted sons and daughters of God through Christ ====which give you the right to be heirs of God's promises ====there is also the privilege of calling God Father ===

We see that the Galatians are believers but are backsliding into slavery of the law by doing the works of the law and Paul says it seems as if he is wasting his effort on them ====

I say ----We need to understand here that just because one has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit their mind is not renewed and so one can slip back into old patterns ---it is important to have a mind change that lines up with how God wants you to think and get out of your old way of thinking -----Carnal Christians are on the milk of the Scripture ---and can backslide very easily ---

Paul finds it hard to understand how one who has been freed from the bondage of the law to Freedom in Christ can move back into bondage once again --

Even though Paul preached to the Galatians when he had an illness or weakness they did not reject him but Paul says Now for telling you the truth have I become your enemy ===

I say ---Preaching the Truth of the Gospel can certainly make people become your enemy as they don't like hearing the real Truth of the Gospel and resents anyone who tries to Preach the Truth ---Ministers should be received on whether they are God's messengers Preaching the Real truth of God's word --

Paul says to the Galatians ---there are people who will try to win you over to their favor but for are no good ---

I say -----Paul is warning the Galatians to be Careful who they listen to -----

Paul is saying he has doubts about the Galatians as until they can trust in Jesus his work is not complete --

So the last part of this Paul is asking who the Galatians want to be under ---Hagar who was the Bondwoman or Sarah who is the Free woman -----

The slave woman"s son never be an heir with the sons of the free woman -----

So the Galatians had free choice to choose where and with whom they wanted to be with

and we have that choice today ====

Galatians 5
Paul speaks strongly against circumcision. Those who are trying to be declared righteous by the Law have fallen away from grace.

In Christ there is freedom. But Paul cautions against using freedom as an opportunity to indulge the flesh. The desires of the flesh and the Spirit are opposed to each other.

The works of the flesh are listed in detail. They include sexual immorality, drunkenness and outbursts of anger.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Let us behave in accordance with the Spirit, says Paul.

Snoopy's Snappy Review: Galatians 5

Wow! Human beings are complex creatures. Such a distinction between the flesh and the Spirit!

Yours, Snoopy :dog:

So we see here that Paul is being very clear that if you get circumcised you are obligated to keep all the laws --Christ will be of no benefit at all ---

If your trying to be justified by keeping the law then you have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

I say ---True Believers are free from the bondage of the law ----and you cannot Mix the Law with Grace ----you either follow the Law or you follow Christ ------there is no inbetween Folks ==Paul makes that very clear ---

Paul says ---you Were on the right track ----who persuaded you to turn from the Truth ----the only thing that counts now is Faith expressing itself in Agape ----

I say----- it is very important to know who and what your being exposed to when you enter a Church today as many Ministers ==Priests are still preaching and adhering to the law of Moses and not preaching freedom in Christ -----

in verse 13 ----Paul says that in Christ your free but don't use that freedom to indulge in the flesh

So the Greek word for Flesh here is ----Sarx --

I say -----the word flesh is used in different ways in scripture so you really need to look up the word in the passage your reading to get the meaning of how it is used

and the flesh meaning in ---from Strong's
verse 13 is
has an ethical sense and denotes "mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from divine influence, and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God" Galatians 5:13

Paul says --people who act in the flesh will not inherit the Kingdom of God

Paul gives the The fruits of the Spirit and Paul ends with these lines

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Galatians 6
Paul ends his letter with encouragement to the Galatians to support one another in their faith. They must not grow weary of doing good.

Hey everybody
Thanks for joining Snoopy's bible study thread. Snoopy will be packing his typewriter away for a while now and getting busy with other studies.

So God not only sorts people by penis vs. no penis, but also by appearance of penis???

Does God just go around staring at dicks all day?

Imagine being this all-powerful deity and using your incredible omniscient powers to see through underwear.

Omniscient = all knowing. So, yes, God knows the appearances of body parts. And everything else

Right, but he spends an inordinate amount of the Bible concerned with the style of penis you're sporting. It's absolutely insane.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
In recent years it has really struck me that this sentence puts fruit in the singular, even though the list would seem to suggest it should be plural. REflecting on that for a newsletter early in 2024 I pondered that maybe the primary flavour of the fruit is love with the others in the list as sub-flavours (much like in tasting wine there is a primary taste and then 'notes' of other flavours).

Yes, "fruit of the Spirit' is singlular precisely because this list amplifies what the permanent mood of love entails.
But why are "joy, peace,, patience, goodness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control" so little in evidence of the life of the average believer?
Because the "fruit" of love is the fruit of the Spirit, not of ethical striving, and Christians have not heeded Paul's warning, "Do not extinguish the Spiri (1 Thessalonians 5:17)." This "fruit" is best cultivate through a lifestyle of prayer and meditation rather than mechanical Johnny Dogooderism.

I want to thank you paradox3 for tackling Galatians ----lots of hard core Scripture here to digest that I am sure many don't like to take in ----so Kudos to you for doing this Section --
You are great at summarizing your Scriptures and that takes much work for you to do =appreciate your time and effort that you always put into what you take on ------

My view 0n ---Galatians 6

First line shows that there is Righteous Judgment for Believer to correct a Brother or Sister in Christ and it is to be done Gently and the believer is to keep an eye on themselves so they are not tempted into sinful actions ----

1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

Warning Given here that God will not be Mocked ----a man reaps what he sows ----if you sow to please the flesh --destruction will be reaped ---If you sow in the Spirit ---eternal life will be reaped ----

Then we see that the Circumcised who can't keep the law are trying to convince the uncircumcised to get circumcised so they can say they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh ---as neither circumcised or uncircumcised means anything under this new Covenant ---

What Matters Paul says is through Jesus Christ the world has been crucified to me and I to the world ----and Paul says Peace and mercy to all who follow that ----

I say --So many today try and mix the Law with Grace ---and God hates mixture===it means your a Lukewarm Christian and God says when your Lukewarm your neither hot nor cold and that doesn't sit well with God ----

As He gives a warning about being Lukewarm in your Stance with Him ----

Choose People ----your either with Jesus or your against Jesus ---there is no inbetween Folks
