Interesting character. A Brit Muslim married to a Texan and a recent citizen. I don't agree with him re Biden, as I remain convinced that Obama was the most impressive US president of my lifetime, but a good article. I love the balance of The Guardian.

It's interesting that in the late 1930's there was an anti-war, pro-German movement in the US. Many believed that Europe's war would not affect the US. They saw Hitler as good. Of course, Pearl Harbor changed many views in the country.

I wonder what they will be saying about this period in history in 80 years.

As I have repeatedly said, I find Trump as disgusting as most of you.
The only difference is that I consider Biden the worst president in my lifetime.
Like Why Czar, I would vote for Kennedy, if I thought he had a chance.

Well, frankly, if I had a vote, I'd prefer a President who didn't steal top secret documents (and then lie about having returned "all" of them), who didn't attempt to overthrow the legally elected next president, and who are not convicted felons.

I still recall the chaos and the disaster during Trump's term, who will be long remembered for his hobnobbing with dictators, his health plan (which would be ready to release in two weeks, yet never ever appeared), and his bungling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Whatever few good things he may have done, those three big issues alone will forever colour his legacy. Oh, and let us not forget his attempts to dismantle NATO, and his great surprise to find that Puerto Rico was an island, "surrounded by water.... big water...... ocean water." ( that is a direct quite from Trump himself.)

Three little words — "We the people," the opening words of the Constitution of the United States — are the biggest obstacle to achieving the political goals of the left. For that, they must move decisions away from "We the people" — from individuals to government; from elected officials to unelected judges; and from national institutions to international institutions like the United Nations — all safely remote and insulated from "We the people."

Looks like Robert Kennedy Jr. won't be included in June 27th debate after all, because he didn't meet CNN's requirements of a polling minimum and access to enough states presidential ballots, to theoretically be elected president.

@Mystic He only has a chance if people vote for him. The consensus seems to be that a vote for Kennedy is a vote for Trump so why not take that chance? Do you think Trump should choose Vivek Ramaswamy for VP?

I am not sure how you define left unless we the people refers to mobs. The left works to make voters equal and to be able to vote. The left wants elected officials to serve the people rather than corporations.

@BetteTheRed Show me where I said Hannity was a hero of mine. On the contrary I likened him to a higher paid political pundit than Rachel Maddow, but with the same journalistic integrity. As far as I am concerned neither of them have an ounce of it and I do not listen to either of them. I do not find either of them the least bit entertaining let alone heroic. You seem to be smugly satisfied with yourself for twisting my words - how democratic of you.

"If there is one moment that symbolized our degeneration, it was when an enraged mob gathered in front of the Supreme Court and a leader of the United States Senate shouted threats against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, saying "You won't know what hit you!"

There have always been irresponsible demagogues. But there was once a time when anyone who shouted threats to a Supreme Court Justice would see the end of his own political career, and could not show his face in decent society again.

You either believe in laws or you believe in mob rule. It doesn't matter whether you agree with the law or agree with the mob on some particular issue. If threats of violence against judges — and publishing where a judge's children go to school — is the way to settle issues, then there is not much point in having elections or laws.

Some people seem to think that the Supreme Court has banned abortions. It has done nothing of the sort.

The Supreme Court has in fact done something very different, something long overdue and potentially historic. It has said that their own court had no business making policy decisions which nothing in the Constitution gave them the authority to make.

Get out a copy of the Constitution — and see if you can find anything in there that says the federal government is authorized to make laws about abortion.

Check out the 10th Amendment, which says that the federal government is limited to the specific powers it was granted, with all other powers going to the states or to the people.

Why do we elect legislators to do what the voters want done, if unelected judges are going to make up laws on their own, instead of applying the laws that elected officials passed?

When the people wanted the Constitution amended, it was amended.

But the federal government had no such authority.

Nor did the Constitution give the federal government the right to make laws about abortion, one way or the other.

This is not a partisan issue. The Republican governor of Virginia is providing protection to Supreme Court Justices who live in that state. But the Republican governor of Maryland seems to think that harassing judges and their families is no big deal.

Voters need to find out who is for or against mob rule, whether they are Democrats or Republicans.
