What made Jesus so compelling?

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

  1. We value each other as human beings and community members.
    • We support and respect each other even when we disagree.
    • We do not belittle or harass each other.
    • We do not insult each other or organizations to which we belong.
"The crashing death of the American Empire?" A mindless comment from a shrill Canuck who knows her own nation will never be more than a bit player on the world stage.
    Mystic,
This post of yours has been reported for needless insulting language. The use of insults has been called to your attention numerous times. We ask you yet again to consider your words. If these incidents persist, disciplinary actions will be taken.

It's always interesting to read about people who believe in God but don't go to church. I always wonder what they mean by God.

Then we have the Spiritual But Not Religious crowd.

Do either of these groups find anything compelling about Jesus? Or do they mean something else altogether?

I am reminded of that old chestnut. Tell me about the God you don't believe in.

God is everything to them ... nothing excluded (thus defining nothing in essence)! Perhaps a sentient ... just a feeling?

Is emotional intelligence nothing concrete and thus difficult for powers to toss about as a stone in a glass house? Self destructive ... mortal legitimacy as a topic mortal know little about from the first law about reflection: "be good to one another!"

Then the God-Kings stepped into the image ... it is not a pretty picture for the entire global community which the flat out denies immediately in a rush ...

Some wise one said empires are built to fail ... and another said wise men are ignorant ... a mire reflection based on foul opinion (as compared to the primal rule)! Few see it ... auto mon seared?

Life is a scorching lesson ... best observed from the fringe ... so much for BPD! One out some innings to go ... as the thing flames ...

Yet bullishness goes on within the great powers until de knickered (knockers) and roasted in the temple for the populace ... beware of the population curve, especially the outliers ... some say the outliers are of value! They can see into that great beyond ... as in an OBI! Oh buoy you may not have expected that floater!

The world right now is a target rich environment for worries

Plenty to choose from :3
True enough. We probably need to keep in mind that Jesus expected the world to end within a generation and it still hasn't happened.
It also continues to be a time for miracles and wonders, innovations, beauty, love...all those things that make life worth living
So very true.

One could say a necessary experience for heavenly fallout ... much unseen by power ... thus the concept of Gabriel! There are rumored to be other shades of observation ... shattered perspectives? Get Gabriel appears to be the penetrating one ... subtle!

So part of the attraction to Jesus was having a message that offered connection or hope. There is a great hunger for connection today. We need to discern how we can offer connection for others in a way that feels authentic and believable.

Yes I agree about a message that offered hope.

I am less sure about the connection aspect. We really don't hear about His followers forming communities until after the resurrection

Connection is part of the story about Zacchaeus. Claiming the kingdom of heaven is imminent is partly about connection. He offered loving connection with God. He violated rules that were barriers to connection by talking to women, eating with people deemed sinners, and so on.

Yes I agree Jesus broke down barriers

He violated rules that were barriers to connection by talking to women, eating with people deemed sinners, and so on.
But is that what makes him compelling, given that the religion that nominally follows him scrambled to get those barriers back up as quickly as possible once it became established. I mean, almost every rule he broke would still have gotten him in trouble in almost any Christian society after about the 2nd century. If breaking down barriers is what is compelling about Jesus, why didn't that "stick" in his followers?

This doesn't explain anything for me. Can you say more?
Have you read a book about James Bond, Sherlock Holmes or Winnie the Pooh? What did you like about these hero characters in these books. When you understand that, you will be able to answer your own question. Hint: It was written/told well.

Ahh I see. I knew you were an atheist but I wasn't aware you reject the idea of an historical Jesus. In that case, what would you say is the appeal of the fictional character?

Or am I misunderstanding the point you are making?

If you accept the fact that Jesus existed and had a message that was at all relevant to the modern world, it would go something like this: We are animals and we can't always control our behaviour. This creates the profound need for forgiveness of each other. We are all more or less the same when viewed with humility. The good news is that we don't have to be otherwise to experience Love.
