I've gained new perspective on the "if I were in your shoes" thing. People say in strong in my response to cancer. Since when is merely taking treatment and putting one step in front of the other strong? I mean what's the alternative? Shrivel up and die? It really is a "better you than me" thing and a very mild version of what PWD must face. :(

I thought of you on Saturday @Kimmio Laughterlove. I was talking to two women at a cancer support group on Saturday. One has been metastatic since 2015. It is amazing she has lived so long with ovarian cancer. The other has just been diagnosed with a recurrence of ovarian cancer. She spoke of how she will choose MAID when the time comes. The other woman said she will just let nature take its course and die when the cancer takes over. She was a nurse for many years and saw that people die comfortably when cared for properly. I was really glad to be part of that conversation. It really confirmed my view that we need to make sure there are adequate supports even for people who will die imminently.

How much of this MAID expansion is actually a way to cheap out rather than provide proper services?

I just watched a propaganda film promoting assisted suicide, produced in WW2 Germany by Goebbels. I didn’t know it existed until today and it is a starkly and sickenly “normal” and mainstream seaming movie depicting typical family of the day, “good doctors”, a “fair” justice system, and people “nobly” supporting and aiding loved ones into a “good death”. It’s so similar to the narrative that today’s mainstream believes it should’ve been widely circulated as educational critique years ago. It infuriatingly affirms what I’ve been saying for years. There was to be no supporting MAiD without going down the path that led us to today because mainstream liberal progressive people didn’t understand that they would be used in this way to open up the slippery slope. Fascism then as now is insidious and gets in through every sociopolitical and cultural stream it can seep into to poison the whole well. It works in their favour that the mainstream public believes it’s only extremists who do it suddenly. It’s actually a process over time. It was always about cost cutting to support the priveleged and buffer the war coffers. And now it’s too late because the laws have been passed and expansion is going ahead - though only stalled for now, for those with mental illness. It’s too late for the hundreds of people who weren’t dying who went through with MAiD because they’ve been taught to despise disability or to feel like burdens for needing help, or because they were too poor to afford to live with dignity - and too late for thousands who died too soon when they could’ve been treated by different means to alleviate their suffering and prolong their lives - and for many who could’ve even been cured. And there will be many more. Including children.

I don’t know the legalities of posting the film but I imagine it might get flagged here if I did. I only want people to see it, to educate and inform - not to spread the propaganda. The thing is, it seems as benign as pro MAiD discourse today so the film is not even shocking. What should be shocking is how similar to today it is.

The definition of abortion varies by age of the indigent inductees ... whether yet still a mass of protein with little brain or an adult war monger sending numbed brains off to die for a cause ... and the cause is verily misunderstood because knowledge is shunned ... those behind the naivete ruse inform us of their brutal ideas ... and we don't know it?

Can someone explain ignore, stupefy and those related euphemisms again? Maybe naivete ... of the neigh and nay gang as they take on culpability as another unknown expression ... know that's not ide ... the lie is older as Lae Doubt ... foundational of a hard living ...
 
Someone posted this quote on Twitter, an ally in the fight against MAiD expansion. I’m putting it here because it clearly shows history repeating itself - ironic that the same “trustworthy” professional and bourgeoise class let it happen again. All those educated minds, and they “forgot” it happened before. Then, like today, ethicists, doctors and university professors were consulted, committees were formed, public opinion polls were done, and movies were made that influenced attitudes… No one wanted to believe us when we said so because systemic ableism prevents them. …Why would we have anything important to say? s/

Somebody should’ve used their 5 minutes in one of the AMAD meetings to quote that word for word, rhetorically, in response to the questioning.
 
Our side of things made it into Teen Vogue. That feels like progress. Teen Vogue, believe it or not, has become a legitimate and pretty strong source of political journalism, leaning left. Probably because parents also read it. And, disabled teens will read it. It’s also an American magazine, and the article highlights important differences in the disability movements in both countries right now - discusses how our American counterparts might help us in this battle. If American disabled kids and parents are reading it, I think there’s going to be a reckoning.
