They can't be shut down - busses and subways - because essential workers need to use them to get to work in cities. More people would die from lack and neglect if they couldn't use them, and one person to a car, we know, is bad for the environment.

What we could do is slow down. Just slow everything down and schedule fewer trips. That would mean employers and businesses would just have to suck it up and change their expectations, and bottom line. Airplane travellers would really have to plan ahead. Maybe we could dial capitalism back to a humane level.

What about testing for Covid before you get on?

I don't think that's realistic. Lots of people transfer buses and go back and forth several times a day. I used to use transit to go everywhere...work, errands. Too many stops, also. Bus drivers and transit security have a hard enough time checking and enforcing fares.

What we need to have happen is for a large enough percentage of people to be vaccinated, kick this virus' ass - so we can function reasonably normally.

And this happened after polio vaccines? measles vaccines? etc..... the whole world falls into victimhood when science discovers a vaccine to combat a deadly virus?
It’s the word the great smallpox eradicator Donald Henderson used in his 2006 prediction of the consequences of lockdown, a word that wasn’t around then. His masterful article addressed the idea of travel restrictions, forced human separation, business and school closings, mask mandates, limits on public gatherings, quarantines, and the entire litany of brutality to which we’ve been subjected for nearly a year, all summed up in the word lockdown.

Dr. Henderson warned against it all. This is not how you deal with disease, he said; at a minimum society needs to function so that medical professionals can do their work. Diseases are managed one person at a time, not with grand central plans. That was the old wisdom in any case. Under the influence of vainglorious modelers, ideological resetters, and politicians hoping to make names for themselves, most of the world tried the lockdown experiment anyway.

Paraphrasing from:

Catastrophe Is All Around Us – AIER

This is just the beginning. Even governments in presumably civilized countries with functioning democracies – are capable of the unthinkable, and they are capable of persisting in the unthinkable for an appalling amount of time.

Well I'm suggesting that once tested you just show a card that says you're Covid free that will work for every stop and every day. Same as for planes.

I have to say, I'm a little bit worried about this thinking. I hear Trudeau saying this too.
We don't know how long immunity lasts after the vaccines, or if it works on the new variant of Covid, or if it even works for that matter....after all all a vaccine can offer is immunity and if we don't know how long or "if."....how can we yet say we will be functioning normally after having the vaccine? No company as of yet has proved immunity.

I don't get the purpose of the curfews being proposed in some areas. Spreading things out = less contact. Work places, grocery stores, medical appointments etc. Seems counterproductive.

Well, what they could be trying to stop/ameliorate is what's happening here. We're about an hour north of Toronto, which is a serious hotspot, and not doing so well ourselves. We were orange to their red before we all went into grey. Well, a customer of mine works at the north Walmart, which contains a McDonald's. They were trying to do some level of contact tracing by taking down phone #s. Apparently, a large proportion of those phone #s were from 905/416 area codes.

Seems like there's better ways rather than increasing the risk for many essential reasons people are around others, unless curfews are extremely limited in what types of things they actually cover.

You realize the Master stated that the common folk shouldn't know ...
And even after a full year, the public remains mostly deeply ignorant of the age/health gradient of Covid-19 fatalities, even though we’ve known this since February of last year!

Even conceding the accuracy of testing and exigencies of fatality classification – it’s 99.997% for 0-19 years, 99.98% for 20-49 years, 99.5% for 50-69 years, and 94.6% for 70+ years.

It’s nursing homes that have been a main vector for disease outcomes.

The threat to school-age kids approaches zero.

The more information we get the more normalized the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen seems, a respiratory and flu-like illness we have seen become pandemic before it became endemic just like another dozen times in the last hundred years.

Is it that numbers like the above are just too abstract to mean anything to people?

More likely, the numbers mean something but that meaning is overwhelmed by the nonstop panic porn one sees on the media each day.

People can no longer distinguish these various terms that media pundits throw around to signal how terrible this disease is: outbreaks, cases, outcomes, deaths, spread, infection rates, hospitalizations – it’s just a huge and blurry blizzard of terrible.

Citing a bit of reality-based data cannot make a dent in the pathological Munchausen Syndrome that has been unleashed.

Primal fear has swamped rationality for the better part of 10 months.

Primal fear - fear of vaccines, fear of Gates, fear of whatever your conspiracy gurus are peddling - has been swamping your rationality for longer than 10 months. Years.

My step dad is in his 80's. Healthy, active, lives in his own house with my mom. My mom is mid 70s. So are my dad and step mom. They are also active. As are my aunts and uncles in other cities. I don't want them to die thank you - just because you and your conspiracy buddies think "pff! , it's just a bunch of elderly people dying." Well when covid hits old people die fast - and mine are not ready to go - they don't even seem old! - and most of them are cheerfully complying with safety orders from epidemiologists who know their stuff (the restrictions here are not that awful and I think my step dad shops too much but it gives him something to do) and it's not up to you and your conspiracy buddies to let them die off. They are not living in fear. They are making the best of the modified lifestyle for the time being, to survive, and are doing their part for others they care about. They don't visit with friends in homes because they care about their friends not getting sick and dying. They are being adults and establishing different habits and boundaries for the time being because it's sensible. Back off promoting harm to people I love, would you?

BC restaurants are taking one phone number from each party for the purpose of contact tracing in the event of an outbreak. I don't fast food places are doing this though. Perhaps they are only doing it in restaurants where people spend more time together.

This happened in our area too......red zone population can't shop as much, so travels to the lower level zones.....I wondered why the province just didn't tell people their drivers licence would be checked at the check out, to make sure they were from the same zone as the shops.

For all the doom and gloom about lockdowns here's a reminder. Society experienced something like this 100 years ago. Then the roaring 20's happened. There is opportunity for growth in any time of crisis.
Sure hasn't hurt the real estate industry in ontario either, other than Toronto condo's.
Interest rates are at an all time low.

Technocracy is indeed growing ... manufactured crisis is always the tool of tyranny of the few over the many. Interesting how many people are willingly complying with this manifestation of the Internet of Bodies at the disposal of the technocratic overlords. Humanity is being swallowed up by the machine. And the people applaud. Never imagined that I would see this unfold in my own lifetime. Still ... resistance is growing and I am encouraged to keep on keeping on ... as a free human being ... for as long as I can keep my wits about me.

What if they live in one zone and commute to work in another?
