David Milner began writing about games in 2011 as a distraction from the history thesis that was consuming his life. He fell in love with the hobby as a five year old who saved up all his coins to play Street Fighter II, and never quite understood how Alex Kidd in Miracle World worked on his Sega Master System II without a cartridge. In 2018 he won best games journalist at the Australian IT Journalism Awards for his investigation into crunch and unhealthy working conditions in the industry. Beyond games, he's fond of Star Wars, heavy metal, football (soccer), and snowboarding. He tweets too much.

So yeah ... a video gamer that lives virtually online ... is the expert on Victorians in lockdown suffering for a noble cause. Forget the grandmas ... oh wait ... it's them that the David Milner's are sacrificing for ... just living pretty much the same life they always have with their biggest sacrifice being they have to drink at home while building legos and playing video games and being on twitter instead of going to the pub whenever they want to. Cheers!

So , gathering limits are back on in Ontario. 10 indoors, 25 outdoors but staffed settings like restaurants, bars, banquet halls, churches are exempted for now.

My employer's parent company is holding a management conference next week and had originally been making us go in person. They started relaxing that last week as things started going downhill in Ontario and they finally made it virtual yesterday.

I think so. Looks like Pilgrim's link got cut off about 5 characters before the end so wasn't working.

My apologies - my puter skills are not good. Thank you, Mendalla, for rescuing me on this front. (again).

It's interesting to reflect on how, in a city of millions, a few hundred turn up at a rally and are given maximum coverage. Sadly conflict and mayhem sell newspapers, harmony doesn't seem to rate as well.......

Those that die are those that would be most affected by any virus - the elderly, immune compromised, etc. When she was asked could this be like the Spanish flu that killed more people than WW1 she replied that many who died of the Spanish flu died from secondary bacterial infections - and there wasn't antibiotics available. A weakened immune system - battling the flu -led to the subsequent bacterial infections.

I'm very concerned with fear mongering. After our recent bushfires, a friend in England contacted me in a panic because her local newspaper reported than 10,000 homes could be lost in Sydney.

Panic when you need to panic. folks......
my point was that if you're fighting a virus, you're more susceptible for acquiring a secondary bacterial infection.
It concerns me when we -who are not medical specialists - feel entitled to our opinion. It's like we don't trust our medical experts anymore. Our Australian government is playing the fear card -sending those from the affected area in China to Christmas Island, when our medical authorities have said that, medically speaking, that is not the best option.

I talked about this virus with my doctor -and she said it was just another 'bad flu' - but, for most folks, not likely to be life threatening.
Maybe wash your hands more and use hand sanitizer when out of the home - but don't go into fear overdrive. Fear has its own problems -like racism.
We can all play the "I'm the noblest Roman of them all" but it's time for some honesty......

Quarantining is the right precaution when it comes to a "new" dangerous virus.
BUT!

We live in the real world. I'm now retired - yet if I'm feeling a little unwell I'll still keep up most of my engagements. I won't mix with anyone who I know is frail or has health problems -but I'll still go to the supermarket, chemist, Post Office, etc.
But imagine if you are frightened about losing your employment, because you are on a low wage and have bills to pay, a family to support, would you risk losing your valuable job when you are still physically capable of working?
I live in a big city, and I suspect most folks in this city are thinking, " Well, all Aussies who've contracted this virus, none have died and most have recovered, so I think it's reasonable to not risk losing my employment at this stage."

I suspect this scenario isn't confined to Australia -all over the world this is the reality concerning health and government officials........
Not to worry, Canucks, our Aussie scientists are on their way to developing a vaccine - so if you can just hang on for about a year - a vaccine will calm down the hysteria.
I found this interesting......

No matter the virus most survive.
My only added precaution at present is to use hand sanitizer when visiting/on public transport etc.
This thread has become an example of how folks feel uncomfortable with cognitive dissonance -and their efforts to rid themselves of that discomfort......

How your tune has changed ... harmony is now 'just following orders'?

The peaceful march in Victoria with the cry “FREE VICTORIA” from the tyranny of Andrews showed that 10s of thousands of people came out risking arrest from the ruthless police that claims to be just following orders as the Nazis did in executing Jews as they try to pretend they are not the problem. I have said many times that UNTIL the police wake up and defend the people against tyrants like Andrews, then freedom vanishes. They will abuse the people and hide behind the slogan they were just following orders when they swear an oath to defend the human rights embodied in international law.

There will always be diseases that are part of nature. Viruses are born and their role in nature is to thin the herd. These coronaviruses are typically the common cold and target the elderly. Many die from this category of viruses because they attack the breathing capacity. Anyone with an elderly parent knows the danger of losing them is always in the flu season. To be the equivalent to the Spanish Flu which killed about 60 million people, today that would need to be over 200 million.

The lockdowns were supposed to be needed because the hospital would be overwhelmed. That NEVER happened. There is just no justification for this and Andrews is either taking bribes, or he is an idiot and has no way to retain power unless he then abolishes elections. The audacity of him saying stop protesting and nobody will get hurt after the police kicked a man in the head putting him in a coma are the words of someone who clearly does not respect human rights nor the principles of a free society.

There is great concern that Victoria police themselves had indicated it was the force’s “preference” that private guards be used as the “first line of security”. The use of private guards may also explain why they are so ruthless. If they are not from Victoria, they have no connection to the community and do not have to go home to a local wife and kids. This is not an issue that is given much investigation. Meanwhile, the Victoria police have issued nearly 20,000 fines for Covid-19 violations so far during a pandemic.

Now Andrews calls anyone who disagrees with him a “conspiracy theorist” and wants to imprison them. What’s next? He will seek extradition internationally for anyone who criticizes him? Perhaps he will imprison Sky News for reporting the truth.

That's hilarious - you need to get a life........
I suppose I should be flattered - you've trolled (and I use the word advisedly) through all my posts.

Yes, in the beginning I did think this was going to be just another flu - but the science -and the word "pandemic" changed my point of view.

I see nothing wrong with changing your mind. It's called cognitive dissonance - some of us are capable of it - some of us are not......

Referencing previous posts is trolling?

So because I look back and forth ... I need to get a life?

Meaning what ... actually looking at more than one point of view is not a life?

"The science" and "The word" pandemic changed your point of view.

In psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory ideas, or values at the same time, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values.

Seems that the science in favor of my point of view is surfacing now even inspite of the status quo science that changed your mind ... but then I don't have a real life ... so I have more time to look for more of the censored sources that I am told not to look at ... and because I am actually capable to make up my own mind based on more than your own cognitive dissonance ... I too am capable of changing my own mind ... whether I am told to change it or not.

Emotional-intelligence fits that mode ... thus we are into IT! One must decide one way or the other or ... just mediate! Chew it over in length ...

The US CDC (Center for Disease Control) is now saying that COVID is not airborne which basically is reversing it back to aerosol drops until they can definitely prove it's airborne....
Are these things being reversed due to political pressure?

In this case, I am suspicious. We have seen a lot of research suggesting airborne transmission, at least in a limited way. For CDC to accept that, then suddenly withdraw it as a "mistake" seems bogus to me. Science, esp. health science, should never be controlled by political whims, but I think we are seeing just that.

They are reversing in the small droplet spread of more than six feet and going back to the large droplet spread

pressure? Who knows

the confusion and mixed messages are ridiculous And then politicians wonder why people are doing what they are asked to do

last night in the news there was a big uproar over some outdoor party in Hamilton. Some sort of car rally in a parking lot

yet we are told outside is better
we are told keep your distance
we are encouraged to get out and walk

but being in a car in a parking lot is a big deal

i can’t figure out what politicians don’t get about this mixed messaging

Some sort of car rally in a parking lot
Egregious defiance of the laws of the land ... top news ... fines must be increased ... Doug Ford was priceless on this ....

"They just don't get it. If we weren't so backlogged on MRIs I'd send you to the MRI to get your brain scanned because I just don't think theres anything in there. We get the protocols out there and they just blatantly ignore 'the people'. I, I, you've gotta really wonder. These are people that I connect with because I go to these car shows I connect with them. So they organize them ... so FYI they're gonna look for ya - they're gonna get ya. I had an opportunity to talk to the Hamilton Chief Police and just an FYI ... they have 30 days to scan your license plate and they'll present one of those big nice fat checks of $10,000 for you. And if that doesn't sink in then you have too much money. But even forget the $10,000 you're putting people's lives in jeopardy. "

Sounding rather like conspiracy theorist ...
