Don’t cruise-ships have medical facilities and a few medical staff on board?

Pence wants to bring people off the ship to get them cared for. Trump wants to contain the spread of the virus and keep them on the ship.

If there are going to be cruises, and there are going to be serious viruses...Why not equip the ship (if they can’t do it for this one, make sure subsequent ships are equipped before they set sail) with small “hospital” areas with proper equipment and enough medical staff? They’re big enough. Just take out one of the many food and entertainment facilities aboard. Hire several “Dr. Adam Brickers”. Trump could probably relate to that idea in that “as seen on TV” head of his.

Does that sound like a bad idea? (They do have “infirmaries/ sick bays”...why not make sure they are equipped for the appearance of covid-19 (as much as possible) before sailing?

Diamond Princess demonstrated the folly of using the ship as quarantine. They probably ended up with far more cases than if they had evacuated earlier. Too close quarters and too isolated. The goal is to get anyone who tests negative away from those are positive asap. My understanding is that everyone on this ship will be tested, and that will be easier in an onshore quarantine.

Consider this:
100% of those who contract coronavirus are going to die.
100% of those who do not contract coronavirus are also going to die.
The difference in average life expectancy between the two groups will prove to be only very marginal.
That is because the large majority of those who die of COVID-19 will already be nearing the end of life or have other health problems.

Hmm, the chinese doctor who did the first warning about it was what...38? And must have been healthy enough to work as a doctor.....
Funny how you return to statistics, seems to be contrary to your usual arguing for individualism ( or what else would be anarchy?). Or is it depression that is speaking here?

Ad Hominem?

I was in Canadian Tire and the mall it's attached to...weird. Normally on an afternoon like today it would be busy. It was so quiet. cntire was out of TP... Big change from a few days ago.

We got takeout from a favorite Chinese place for lunch yesterday and the place was dead. It is basically the only dim sum place in London right now so is usually pretty lively on weekend mornings.

So yesterday I went to the Ajax Costco to pick up a few things we needed. The store was very busy. I had to park in a faraway part of the lot, giving me about as far a walk to the store through the lot as possible. There was a cart near my car, so I grabbed it. I had to walk a long way pushing that cart. When I went through the entrance of the store they had employees reaching out to wipe the handles of the carts with some sort of disinfectant wipe. I said to the woman, "Dont bother. It really isn't necessary." I got somewhat rudely rebuffed by her and she still inststed on reaching out and giving the handle a quick wipe. Now here's the thing. I've already had my hands on the handle for a while, pushing the cart to the store from the far end of the parking lot. I've already been exposed to any virus on the handle. What practical value is there in having employees giving cart handles a quick wipe after people have already been pushing the carts?

And as I traversed the warehouse I passed by the area where they usually stock toilet paper. There was no toilet paper to be seen but there was skid after skid after skid of Jumbo paper towels. Any port in a storm?

I think we need to take proper precautions - again, washing hands, etc. I don't really get into the hand sanitizers to be honest. I'm quite confident that a good wash with soap and water will be sufficient. And masks? No. I think we should be concerned, but not panicky about this.

Reason has departed as irrational ... a mean cut by asclepius ... on the one way of process! Thus we often don't process ... contrary progressives?

Again the little folks are stiffed and shafted ... in lack of mythical understanding ... passions take over when fear and anger evolve! The red and yellow as crossing the line of black and white ... doodlin' ... as the big card says NU's is no good ... expect the need for diggings!

Minor effect below the visible horizons ... expect dark clods and fuzziness ... cause we don't know much!

We ate at a local Chinese cafe on Saturday. There were other customers. Maybe not as many as usual but it was chucking snow which normally means fewer people moving around.

If you watch the SciShow I posted upthread, Hank actually explains why handwashing is the best way. Soap breaks down the oil coating that helps protect the virus, making it easier to wash off

When I last worked at a hospital, we were told that hand sanitizer was ABSOLUTELY the way to go. We were instructed to use soap and water only when our hands were visibly soiled. I have been retired for a few years now (actually, several years) so I wonder if this might have changed by now.

I’ve been told by a doctor that washing with soap and water (sing happy Birthday song twice as a “timer”) is the best way to prevent viruses, but yes, absolutely, use hand sanitizer in between! I think in healthcare setting hand sanitizer is a quick and easy way to make sure hands are cleaned more frequently.

I’ve been carrying hand sanitizer in my purse for years, and when I go to a food court or restaurant i’m glad to have it...especially as it’s often “finger food”. Burgers, sandwiches...I would never eat without washing my hands directly before eating...but sometimes it’s a distance to the public bathroom and chances are you have to touch money or surfaces in between washing and eating...so, hand sanitizer! I am convinced it’s helped me get sick less often because i’m often touching my face, sweeping my unruly hair out of the way, etc.
