This is a question I have learned to ask in my work. I can't remember where I first heard this question. It is not one I created. I have had many different and interesting responses. Often people will say something about religion. When I say it is a more open question than that, they will shake their heads and consider the question. I have gotten some interesting answers.

I recently had occasion to ask this question in a church community. I found the responses particularly interesting. There seemed to be a lack of spirit or spiritual reflection. Isn't that where spirituality is "supposed" to be? If not there, then where?

So, how do you feed your spirit?

I struggle with the spirit. To feed it makes sense because it seems to me that everyone does not have a spirit. I think you do or you don't. I don't think we can learn to have Spirit or get the Spirit from somewhere. I was once on the planning team of a Spirituality event. The convenor of the team was going to bang spirituality into everyone that came. No one signed up so the event was cancelled.

Consider what spirit is?

Firstly, it's been said, spirit is energy. That driving force that moves evolution along it's course.

Secondly, Spirit has a sentient and responsive quality that many identify with.

Spirit is perfect in it's own right and is the subjective force that brings about the objective form. They are one and the same. But for humanity, who fell down that a rabbit hole of limited awareness, Spirit is something to be experienced and identified with.

There is nothing we can "feed" to Spirit. Only with our respect, firstly, and then the eventual identification of Spirit to that Soul/Christ Consciousness we all posses within, can we ever expect to contribute to Spirit.

CH what if I asked, how do you feed your soul? or how do you recharge your batteries? Does that help or hinder?

The concept of "feeding" the spirit may be clumsy. It certainly starts a conversation when people don't usually speak of things spiritual.

I find that I feed my spirit best when I am able to help others - like when I am helping to welcome and feed the hungry at my church, or do something special with my grandchildren.

I also feed my spirit by reading - right now I'm reading Walter Farquharson's book "An Audacious Invitation" in which he reflects on the Gospel according to John.

And I feed my spirit by worshipping on Sunday mornings. Just being there - the music, the symbolism, the familiar faces gathered for the same purpose - the scripture reading all feed my spirit.

Great days - nature, beauty, silence, colour - gratitude for the wonders of the world ...

Reading is a big one, any kind of reading though scientific, spiritual/theological and philosophical books work best (that includes strongly spiritual fiction, though).

Thinking about spiritual matters, as I do when I am working on a service or sermon.

Being in a natural area or in some ancient, historic place and contemplating my place in the world.

Reading, contemplating, meditating, thinking, performing any of a large variety of contemplative/meditative actions, which can be something as simple as everyday activity performed with the awareness that all matter is imbued with spirit. The awareness that we are a spiritual universe.

Worship (some ministers say they can't worship when they're leading. I've never had that problem.)
Morning devotionals with prayer, Scripture reading and a Scripture journal where I jot down thoughts about what I've read that often find their way into sermons. A good way to start the day.
Silence and solitude (not always easy to find with a 10 year old in the house!)
Cycling. I love riding wherever the Spirit leads and the exercise is both spiritually and physically invigorating.
Walking the dog. I talk with God a lot while I walk the dog, and sometimes I talk to the dog while walking with God.
Astronomy, in a very amateur sense. The universe fascinates me and puts me in awe at what God has created.

as long as the Dog doesn't talk back , your good to go :)

What great ideas!

Music is an awesome way to feed my spirit. It depends on where I am what music I might listen too. Steve Bell is my Christian choice. I have been known to listen to Woman to Woman in the car while singing loudly when I need the feminist spirit to hit me. I am sure @Pinga knows what I mean :) Those are only two options for music.
