Kimmio - Americans (and Canadians) slaughtered their native peoples and stole their land. Americans and Canadians enslaved blacks (and native peoples). We discriminated severely agaiinst irish Catholics well into the 20th cenury. We discriminated against Italians. We despised Jews, fordding them to come to North America even as we knew what Hitler was doing. In fact, we wouldn't accept jewish refugees even after 1945. Until very recently, blacks in Canada and the US had been forced to live in separate and poor districts, and were denied any decent jobs. We imprisoned whole families of Innocent Ukrainians in World War 1, and of Japanese in World War 2. We had severe limits on the numbers of Jews, blacks, and some other permitted to enter our universities. In World War 1, we would not accept black soldiers except as labourers.
For Canada, check group photos of our sailors and airmen in world war 2. Count the number of blacks. You won't need even one hand to do that. In 1970, I caused a disturbance at a lake cottage area for Montreal's rich. The lake committee called a special meeting to find out who had invited the Jew. (I was wearing a jewish T shirt. with the star of David on it.)
Equality? Trump's son-in-law has a degree from Harvard even though he did not have the qualifications to go to Harvard. No problem. His father just gave a huge donation, and his dumb son got a degree. That's also how the obviously retarded George Bush got an MBA at Harvard. So much for equal opportunity.
Kimmio, you live in a dream world.
The U.S. is not and never has been a land of equals or of equal opportunity. It is also one of the worst for social services, for brutal treatment of prisoners, and the world's largest prison population.
And you live in a dream world.

I have been thinking and reading as a way to comprehend how a man like Trump could get in. I do understand the desire for change. The neoliberal policies that have been in place at least since Reagan, Thatcher and Mulroney are coming to bite the regular person in the butt. People are aware of this, but not apparently aware of the big picture. They hurt, and see a saviour. I understand that. I do not understand how someone like Trump can be the agent of change.

Well, no Graeme, I don't. I am fully aware that there is room for ample improvement - but I am alive to say so. I was born 3 months early and weighed just over 2 1/2 pounds. My mom was very sick. That was in the 70s. I doubt I would be alive in many other places. I doubt I would've gone to normal schools. I doubt I would've ever had a chance to work, get married, etc. ... To have "normal" life experiences ... and by the way...I am low income. Poor, even.

Didn't you tell us you never finished high school but also that you taught at University? How did that happen?

It happened by luck. The kids i grew up with ended up in low quality jobs - as I did after I got kicked out of high school.
The U.S. is not a leader in serving its people. For a developed nation, it generally has the worst score in the world. There are lots of figures dealing with this from agencies all over the world. Its health record is poor. its education is poor. its wage gap is horrible. And it's even worse when you look at racial categories.
As well, it has a long record of imposing dreadful conditions on other countries. It established brutal dictatorships all over latin America, The Phillipines, South Vietnam, Iran.......
As well, it has a long history of aggression and mass murder. That's particularly true since the development of the bomber as a killer of civilians in World War Two.

Northwind, Trump isn't an agent of change. That ain't going to happen. Again, the problem is not indificual people. The problem is a society so structured economically, political and socially, that it produces Trumps and Clintons.

I don't believe Trump is an agent of change for the record. What I do recognize is people wanted change.

That's what's called blather. There is not a word of substance in there. It's all just warm and fuzzy sounding words. And I fail to see anything happening in America that one can reasonably blame on God. Where does God say we should hate Muslims and Mexicans?

Was this on national TV or just his website? I would have thought Obama would have addressed the nation?

I read a few days ago that it is very odd Trump hasnot given a president elect interview

He appears to just put up youtube videos and tweets. So no one is able to ask questions

even though the press did a terrible job at the election prrocess, We all need a free press to at least ask questions and hopefully do some digging

The issues about conflict of interest are quite eye opening. And there seems to be no resolution

I now i see three states may be doing recounts looking at possible computer fraud

So the mess goes on.

Read on Twitter this morning that a couple of computer specialists who work for a university were suggesting such recounts. Have the states now said that they will do them?

The U.S. is lost with its people stumbling through the dark, hating the darkness but unable to find the light. I think the violence is very close - and I would not be surprised to see the start of it at Standing Rock. And that violence may very well spread to Canada. And it may well spread to our native peoples who have no reason to be grateful to any Canadian government in history - and today.

This is not the first time that Trump has backed away on a major promise. But his support from angry people came because of the positions he took, no matter how foolish they might have been. Where does that anger go now?
In fact, there are huge changes coming in all sorts of matters relating to work. One obvious one is the inicreasing reliance on cheap labour in third world countries. Then there's the high degree of automation in all jobs - and that mean huge job losses.
Governments are not saying a word. But change is happening, and it's happening fast. The old model of relying on business leaders to make the decisions in all this has never worked. And it's going to be infinitely worse. And that worse is going to be very violent, indeed.
Our political parties, most of them, have been standing back as spectators for the last century and more. What are Liberal plans for the future? Winning elections. That's it. Ditto for the Conservatives - and signs of that in the NDP. Even the Greens, in preparing for dealing with climate change, are only dealing with a singlel aspect of a much, much larger question.
And we're going to pay a price for the failure of all of them.
