So imagine this. You're at a beauty pageant. A contestant all made up and in a lovely gown walks out to perform in the talent portion. With her, she has a guitar player to accompany her. Except it's an electric guitar. And she's the lead vocalist of a death metal band as well as a model. Yeah, it got brutal. And it really happened at Miss World Chile. The contestant is Ignacia Fernandez who has fronted progressive death metal band Decessus since 2020 and can grunt, growl, and scream with the best of them from what I have seen so far. Got me to look up the band, which is probably the goal in her going in the show in the first place.

I am not generally fond of beauty pageants but good on Ignacia to take advantage of the opportunity to get a stage for her musical, as well as her modelling, talents.

And if you look at my metal thread, she's hardly unique. Alissa White-Gluz, Tatiana Shmayluk, Courtney Laplante, and several other women in metal pack incredible harsh vocals even if most of them mix them with cleans. Even Floor Jansen, best known for spectacular operatic vocals, has been known to let loose with some growls now and then. Guttural roars and growls are no longer the province of the boys. Alissa was the first I heard and, yeah, it's a bit of a stunner to realize a woman can do that with her voice.
