In the 1950s, it was rare for women to be accepted in the sciences, let alone be given executive positions at new government agencies. Dr. Nancy Roman beat that system, becoming NASA's first chief of astronomy in 1959. Among the projects that she had a hand in was the Hubble Space Telescope, one of the most important astronomical tools of my lifetime. She passed away Christmas Day at 93, leaving a remarkable legacy.
