With Halloween looming, the PBS Storied series Monstrum has a good detailed piece on the infamous English haunted house Borley Rectory. While the place burned down decades ago, it's legacy is with us today in the form of all the ghost-hunting TV and Internet programs. Dr. Emily Zarka gives the history of the famous hauntings, but also a history of the investigations led by Victorian-Edwardian paranormal researcher Harry Price, who is the spiritual, if not literal, ancestor of those modern "ghost hunters."
And then, when I looked at my Scientific American Today in Science, they had a piece on an earlier paranormal investigator, 17th century Royal Society fellow Joseph Glanvill, who is name checked in Dr. Zarka's video.

And in doing so, they often end up exposing the deceits, some deliberate, some sincere misunderstandings, that underlie a lot of these phenomena. And the paranormal is very much a part of our world, even if only as a cultural phenomenon.
