This just hit my breaking news feeds. Catherine O'Hara of SCTV, Beetlejuice, Schitt's Creek, Home Alone, and so much more has passed away at 71. I, and many of my peers, first encountered her on SCTV alongside her later Schitt's Creek co-star Eugene Levy. She moved from sketch comedy to comedic acting after that, giving some hilarious performances in both movies and television. Her boatload of awards takes a whole Wiki article unto itself and includes a number of lifetime achievements award, Emmys, Golden Globes, and of course Canadian awards like the Actra and Gemini awards. She received her latest Emmy, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy series, just last Fall for her work in the Apple+ TV show The Studio.

One of the finest Canadians ever to hit a big or small screen. She shall be missed, even if she'll probably be cracking them up in whatever afterlife she's in (hopefully not the one from Beetlejuice).

This is rather unexpected and sad.

I'm not a huge movie or TV buff, but I recognize her talent and what she meant to comedy in those mediums in particular.

Before responding to the memorial thread on another site, I looked to see when SCTV started. It was 1976-77 season. At that time, it was a Canada-only thing. The breakthrough in the US came later. Catherine was one of the original cast who remained with the show throughout it's run. And I was watching from fairly early on so she has been a part of my viewing life for close to 50 years. Which also means she was younger than my son is now when she became a TV star.
