Rob Reiner directed some of the most memorable films of the last couple decades of the 20th century and first decades of the 21st. He was, for a time, one of my favourite directors, giving even Steven Spielberg a run for his money.

Sadly, Rob Reiner is gone. He and his wife were found in their home, both stabbed to death. Nick Reiner, their son, is in custody.

Rob's final film, released earlier this year, was Spinal Tap II : The End Continues. As the sequel to his first film, it book ends his career rather neatly, but that's not how it was supposed to be. Given we have other directors working into their 80s and, in the case of Clint Eastwood, even 90s, Reiner could easily have had a few more in him. What a tragedy and another f-d up event in an f-d up world.

(And I would prefer that we not discuss the f-d up remarks made by a certain political leader here. Put them in a Trump thread, if you must mention them.)

I was about to make the same appeal.

My daughter looooves Stand By Me. My wife looooves The Princess Bride. I imagine we'll watch both this Christmas break in tribute.

Let's not forget he was an actor too, playing Meathead, in All in the Family. RIP.

Yep, I kind of forgot that as I wrote but that's where I and a lot of boomers and Gen X first encountered him. He did do a bit of acting after moving to films, but usually just cameos and supporting roles. I think the biggest was as the "documentary" filmmaker in This Is Spinal Tap. He apparently returned to that role in the recent sequel.

Your wife and daughter and I are on the same page on those. I'm fond of the original Spinal Tap, too.

Stand by Me and Misery may be two of the best movies ever made from King stories. Not strictly faithful adaptations, but terrific movies using his work as a base.

And The Princess Bride is probably the best fantasy fairy tale movie ever. Just the right mix of adventure and humour. Best of all? It was written by the author of the novel, the late William Goldman, so not literally faithful but a strong adaptation. Goldman also wrote the screenplay for Misery.

Oh wow, it just gets worse. Nick Reiner's struggles with addiction and homelessness were actually the basis of a movie he and Rob worked on together a decade ago. Rob directed from a script co-written by Nick.
