In The Beginning Was the Word

Some years back I read Martin Heidegger’s “Language is the House of Being”. I take this to indicate that we inhabit the world of language. Each of us with our own vocabulary. I was born in Friesland. I was speaking our language well before I was a year old. Then we emigrated to Canada. I was...

    In Defense of Doubt

Found and appreciated this “Doubt is the sign of the strongest and the weakest. The strong have doubt, but doubt has the weak.” ~Carl Jung

    Room For All

Lots of snow in Winnipeg. Weary from shovelling. Rested with a cup of tea. With new energy, I took pup for a walk round the block. Sadie loved sniffing all along the way. I was not really happy with the wind blowing in my face. Nice to turn a corner and have the wind behind me. Then home sweet home.

BPoTW: We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

I think of the towers we now build. Each a little taller than the last. Where is this taking us?

BPoTW: We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

The tower was built as an expression of pride. That pride has led, is leading, and will lead to conflict and division. We are many people, in many lands, and, expressing many languages. Still, there is but one life in us all. So sad to see our human being diminished by pride.

In The Beginning Was the Word

It seems to me that language is the key opening the way forward. How we speak matters significantly in the shaping of our cultures. I have noticed three basic patterns in the language of our time. There is the language of unity, the language of accusation, and the language of division. The...

The Church Vs. The State Civil Disobedience

Apologies for using the word idiots. Better to speak of such persons as lost in the dark and resistant to light. Language can be as deadly as bullets.

BPotW - Showdown at the Elah Corral (1 Samuel 17)

David facing Goliath presents me with an interesting metaphor. Goliath is dressed in armor produced by an advanced technology. The Philistines were an industrialized people. As such they challenged the agrarian cultures they confronted. We notice that Saul has a suit of armor which he offers...

    How was church today?

Easter greetings to you all. We had a good time recording our service. Prior to the recording the room was filled with happiness and laughter. The past year has changed our manner of presenting. Just like many of your communities, we are trying to make use of technology to share our services. We...
