    Fare Thee Well

This will be my last post. I have decided to spend less time with my computer for a variety of reasons. That said, I have been very appreciative of all the conversations over my years in the Cafe. Each of our regular posters has done much to bring me benefit. Wishing you each and all the very...

    How was church today?

That said, we had a fine community gathering on Saturday morning, to record a service for our members. The gathering begins with cookies, beverage and conversation. All wearing masks and keeping safe distance. Then to the sanctuary. First our “Called 2 B” band practiced the chosen songs. Then...

    How was church today?

Full agreement on this. As a follower of the way opened by Jesus, guided by his Holy Spirit, I have been creatively resistant to our institutional norms and standards. An example is my experience with Grace United in East Vancouver. When I arrived it was a dying Church. Now it is risen from that...

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

I too will let the matter go.

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

Are you saying that humanity has been bettered by the agenda of progress?

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

The primary issue, for me, in the Tower of Babel story is pride seeking to overcome the presence of God. God understood, by me, as the whole which is greater than the sum of its parts. The building project is a metaphor making clear that human pride will lead to the division of our common human...

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

Agreed. Technology is subject to right use. I do not see this in our world. I see technology misused, which brings harm, and abused, which brings danger.

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

My preference is for the natural world. I am deeply saddened as human beings are increasingly governed by artificial means. This as our environment is approaching a critical juncture.

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

So technology is the new connection between human beings?

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

I am not suggesting that only technical people can work with the available technology. I am suggesting that those who manage the realm of technology are also increasingly liable to manipulation of the population. When I was young we played and worked together as persons in relationship. I now...

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

There is another language at work in our world. It is spoken by highly trained technological persons. Their language shapes the medium in which more and more persons and peoples are living. My imagination suggests that the language of technology will one day manage all of our differences in...

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

I will also suggest, based on experience with a great diversity of persons, that body language often helps us understand what others are trying to say.

We just keep babbling on (Genesis 11:1-9)

I read scripture expecting the spirit of God to grant me insight adequate to the challenge of our time. I have no graven image1 in view when looking into scripture. Following in this way has led me out of the world and into the kingdom. That kingdom being at the heart of my being. Rather, than...

In The Beginning Was the Word

Some years back I read Martin Heidegger’s “Language is the House of Being”. I take this to indicate that we inhabit the world of language. Each of us with our own vocabulary. I was born in Friesland. I was speaking our language well before I was a year old. Then we emigrated to Canada. I was...

    In Defense of Doubt

Found and appreciated this “Doubt is the sign of the strongest and the weakest. The strong have doubt, but doubt has the weak.” ~Carl Jung
