The explanation I gave gives me pause to think God would not even sacrifice Jesus to redeem us, but would try to save us by preaching truth which of course got Jesus in trouble with those in charge.

Abraham or Isaac passed it on? I wonder if one or both of them experienced PTSD afterwards.
I couldn't speak for them, it's possible.
I remember God said he hated sacrifice in the OT.
And Jesus reiterates this in Mathew 9:13.
GOD prefers mercy and so does Jesus.

At risk of controversy, we haven't stopped human sacrifice, just given it more acceptable forms. Executing heretics and witches. Shipping people off to die in battle in "God's name". We kill in God's name and on God's behalf right down to today, we just don't frame it in terms of sacrifice anymore.

True self defence may be the defence....that's probably another thread or not. Might it fall under the category of justice and mercy?....not sure.

Do you all not think that you are tested everyday on which side of the fence your on ---there are only 2 sides ---the negative and the positive ----

All I see in the comments are all in the negative with this piece of Scripture ---

Do you not see any positive aspects of this testing by God of Abraham ?????------

Let your spiritual mind work in stead of your intellectual mind and you just might see something positive in what is happening here ------

For instance -----this is very positive -----

5 Abraham said to his servants, “Settle down and stay here with the donkey; the [c]young man and I will go over there and worship [God], and we will come back to you.”

Now this is very positive and uplifting ----as Abraham knew that one way or another God would allow the Both of them to return to his servants ------if you see it from the Spiritual lens ---not the Intellectual lens -----

Some People like to see God in the negative light ----they thrive on it -----and that is what the enemy is meant to do --keep the negative at the forefront -----

Spiritually it shows you that your Faith in God needs to be grounded and rooted so that when your taken out of your comfort zone ---your trust in God to bring you to the right result will happen -----that is also a positive take away from this piece of Scripture ------

It takes God a while to get to that point IIRC
It's throughout the Bible.
eg.
Psalm 51:16--and Psalm 40:6--this is where David doesn't resort to sacrifice to God for his adultery.

Isaiah 1:13...God tells Israel to bring no more futile sacrifices.

Psalm 51:17....the way to God through sacrifice is a broken spirit and contrite heart.
Proverbs 21:3...to do righteousness and justice is more exceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Hosea 6:6....I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
Mathew 9:13....I desire mercy and not sacrifice, go and learn what this means.

There's more, but it seems we're slow learners.

True self defence may be the defence
But all too often when God's name has been invoked, the war isn't about self-defence. Consider the Crusades or the invasions of indigenous territories in the Western Hemisphere.

Mathew 9:13....I desire mercy and not sacrifice, go and learn what this means.
This last statement is asking ----Do you really Know what this means ---go search it out ----

this is the whole passage

Amplified Bible
Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: ‘I DESIRE COMPASSION [for those in distress], AND NOT [animal] SACRIFICE,’ for I did not come to call [to repentance] the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to change], but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness].”

Who knows, maybe God thought we'd figure it out ourselves ...lol.
YA LOL here is appropriate -----do you think we are that Smart ?-----the god of this world has duped us into thinking we are that smart -----:ROFLMAO:

Back to the shift in attitude about sacrifice.

There is also a shift from polytheism to monotheism which takes place gradually. When the first temple is built, the people are practicing Yahwism. There's a term for this. Yahweh is the first among multiple gods.

Also maybe because sacrifice was lucrative moneywise for a priestly system not necessarily God's?

Agreeing with @unsafe this story might be telling us we can trust in God. But I still struggle with its portrayal of God as a rather heartless tester of humankind.

Could it be a parable? Parables sometimes use absurdity to make a point. I don't want to get us sidetracked into the NT but I think about the parable of the unjust judge in Luke.

Sounds a bit like gnosticism.
Not really. Some gnostics were henotheists but they are not synonyms. Gnosticism refers to knowledge about God, not the nature of God. Some Hindu schools lean that way, too, for instance. Many gods but with one god who is seen as above all.

(Come to think of it, the religion in one of my fantasy worlds is basically henotheistic. I just didn't think of it at the time. There's a supreme deity, an Earth goddess, and then the other deities are her children and subservient to her)
