Novel Coronavirus

Apparently the person I know up north was diagnosed with a kidney infection first, then pneumonia. She was transferred to Prince George and they tested her for Covid. Apparently she is improving and is expected to survive now. That's excellent news.
Oh yes those are more advanced symptoms too....there's starting to be so many.
I'm so glad to hear your friend is improving! That makes it a very Good Friday.

I'm glad your friend is pulling through @Northwind!

It's possible for people to come down with two unrelated illnesses within a short time period of one another. I'd also want to look into that before ruling it a covid symptom. It sort of reminds me of medication side effects. They know some of the more rare obscure ones might occur simultaniously due to unrelated problems but they list all the ones reported just in case (a pharmacist told me that).

She was confirmed to have covid.
I understand. I also understand that because this is new they are not able to see clearly yet what symptoms are covid and what might be happening at the same time as covid - which is why there are all these new "covid" symptoms. Take NYC where people could have treatable health problems that were never checked out because they had no medical insurance, they were functional "enough", and then they get covid. The reason why they were much more sick is because of cumulative problems that originated separately from covid.

I think they probably delayed testing Tracey because they were focussed on kidney infection first. Apparently she was sent home at least once. I have no idea if the kidney issue is related to the covid.

I suspect that could change after this weekend and all the travelling that was done, especially on the ferries. :(
Mostly heading to the small Gulf Island communities from the mainland for great outdoor weekends and likely here too (@BetteTheRed tell your son to hunker down and stay in place as best he can and be careful...it's starting to get more crowded there). Buying up everything in the little stores for themselves. Selfish pricks. I've read tweets about communities thinking about blocking the ferries themselves. I thought BC Ferries was checking for essential travel and doing health checks? And why are they letting on so many passengers at once? If the affected communities get sick they should sue BC Ferries. This is where some authority needs to step in and get involved - when people are running roughshod over little communities who are trying to preserve their health, those communities need help.

If covid explodes here in the next few weeks I think we can lay the blame at BC Ferries' doorstep. They knew the risk, they could've made and enforced stronger interim policies by choice and they chose profit first. They could've restricted travel to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands to residents only and travel to the mainland, to essential travel. It was going so well, it had slowed right down - why did they allow that on a long weekend? (I already answered that). Going on a long weekend vacation is not essential. They chose profit. Even though they are probably already getting bailed out for losses already. If they were still a provincial crown corporation this would not have happened. But the BC Ministry of Transportation still has authority over them - and we are in a state of emergency - and the gov't is the still the main shareholder. They chose to ignore them. I don't know how that works but maybe the gov't should buy them back/ buy them out.

My biggest concern about the spread of covid here was always tourism. Without it we could manage this with fewer restrictions on the locals. And the locals would help the tourist businesses stay afloat if reminded to. I'd even go whale watching somehow. I'd go to the museum, etc. Locals with money would book hotel stays, packages, etc. But we don't need random tourists coming into all the small businesses in tightly woven communities. Normally, we welcome them. But right now is different.

They should make everyone going back quarantine for two weeks under the Quarantine Act - ground them like bad kids for 2 weeks! Have travel enforcement officers meet their return sailings at the port. Still, if the damage has been done it won't make a difference.

There is only one ICU bed in Saltspring Island's hospital, I read. And only 2 air ambulances in BC (they fly over me daily, loud helicopters - even before COVID - remote and islands communities need them. Edit:,Maybe the 2 are for the Island Health Authority because I just read the fleet has 11 aircraft - still they are all needed for other emergencies too). I read someone on Gabriola Island who was really upset because they only have one 1/2 time doctor there. It's a really small community.

She wants to be a scientist. I feel like telling her that a scientist should be able to figure out how to separate the garbage from the recycling from the compost by now (after several instructions)! But then I would feel mean. If we were friendlier I would say that...but since we're not, it would be too mean.
That doesn’t sound good. Can you get a place of your own, even if it’s small? Rents are pretty high in Victoria, I hear. When my kids were launched, I sold my modest half duplex and got enough to pay for my condo outright. No mortgage. It’s not very big, but I don’t need much. I retired 3 years shy of 65, but I have enough of a pension to get by. I live modestly. It’s out in Langford, the cheapest Victoria suburb.

Can you qualify for... what’s it called, subsidized housing, with rents scaled to your income? You must be very patient and kind to not get annoyed with her. True, she is young and the young feel invincible. I saw pictures of parties on Florida beaches.

Just after I replied to this initially, I saw this in my FB feed. Blueberry First Nation letter to Bob Zimmer MP

It was nice to see these steps outline. I know the community has strengthened protective measures in the last few days. Bob Zimmer MP is an embarrassment.
That doesn’t sound very good. The politicians have to realize that they have to cooperate. It will place stress on rural hospitals (likely already in bad shape). The BC govt seems uninterested in the deteriorating medical system. My daughter, a surgeon in Edmonton, said B.C. pays its doctors poorly. Alberta is much better according to her.

Yes, they dreaded co-morbidities. Being over 65 is one. I’ve noticed that a lot of politicians and other bigwigs are getting it a lot. They travel a lot. Prince Charles, aged 71, survived it fine, with just seven days at home. Then the UK prime minister Boris Johnson got it. He was hospitalized in intensive care for days but avoided the dreaded ventilators and is now out of ICU. He is only 55. Slightly overweight.

The ferries should be for essential use only. But maybe we’re being unrealistic here on the Island. It will come sooner or later. I do understand that if people don’t get back to work our whole civilization will collapse. It’s frightening. I don’t know what to think. My mind goes foggy.

Though the "powers" know this and shut it all down. I'm not scared of that. I think things will reorganize, we will have a different economy where different things will be of value, but we'll be okay.

Right now, for example, grocery clerk, any kind of food service delivery or take out worker, is an essential service and those are some of the most respectable jobs around next to healthcare workers. And maybe that's how it should've been already anyway. We need a thriving and protected, not precariously employed, working class. People realize how much they're needed. The first last and the last first, and those in the middle just have to get used to the ends bring flipped - but we'll be okay. The long term psychological and social impacts to society, to childhood development, to mental health and family cohesion, concern me more.

The thing that worries me about the economy, is if an economic collapse is a prelude to war. But we should probably think about getting through covid first.
