Fall - I didn't know it'd be so hard

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

A community where we discuss, share, and have some fun together. Join today and become a part of it!

Wondercafes posts are higher in the winter than the summer, in part as we are not headed outside the same.

You could also do something like write a book or a series of sermons on adjusting to the weather. Keep a journal of how it felt to be a new comer.
Shucks, we could set you up as a Guest speaker like we did for Rita and you could share your insights and struggles if you chose to.

Along with the frost bite warning there is wind chill

Don’t ignore it. Weather may be -5. Not so cold you think. Head out lightly bundled up. But it’s windy so the wind chill might be -20. Very cold and extra protection needed

Also time to buy warm boots, warm coat, scarves and gloves is now if you haven’t already

And stock up on lip balm for chapped lips and hand warmers for really cold days

You were (are?) a rebel - and an adventurous one!
I couldn't imagine such exclusive behaviors existed in Canada - maybe the image of an inclusive/democratic country is a recent thing.

-- And you started using the side door just because the fun of being chased was over?

Some of these curling clubs have been around for a hundred years or more. The road was likely named after the club. "Granite" refers to the type of rock used in curling rocks.

The Granite Club in Toronto was originally just a curling club. Now it's a social/sports club in the highest income neighbourhood in Canada. Their main entrance and foyer open up to the ballroom, so you can't go in the main entrance unless you're wearing a tie. I am not joking. I used to drive to the Granite Club to pick up my wife when she was doing her post-grad at U of T and still curled on the same night as her parents. So I'm picking her up around 9 or 10 at night. There is a side entrance for people not wearing formal wear. I refused to use the side entrance, because I thought that was stupid. So I would walk right into the main entrance and up the main stairs to the curling lounge, every Monday night. And every Monday night a green-jacketed security guard would tell me, "You can't use that entrance, sir."

I varied my replies among things like, "Yes I can," or, "You didn't see me," or, "Look! A poor person!" and dash away up the stairs. They never bothered with me after, so I got in the habit of this.

Until one week, they caught on to me and were ready for me. The security guard stood between the sets of entry doors as I made my way to the entrance. There's only about 8 feet in the vestibule between the two sets of entry doors, but I figured this could be fun. I waltzed through the first set of doors like normal, with the guard telling me more sternly that I can not use this entrance as I opened the first door. I threw a head fake to the left, he bit on the fake and moved to my left to cut me off, and I went right and broke his ankles. I didn't break a brisk walk as a went past him, but I heard him on the radio so I bounded up the main stairs. I got to the safety of the curling lounge, but I was quickly found by the green-jacketed man whose ankles I broke earlier, and what I assumed was his green-jacketed supervisor. They started talking sternly to me as I did my best to summon a concerned look on my face. My wife was not amused. Eventually her parents came over and vouched for me, and being long-time, second generation members, nothing happened. Not even a final warning.

Then, finally, I started using the side door.

That's good advice!

How that would work?

About moving to Ontario:
Maybe that will happen if I get to go to seminary. ELCIC has two of them, one in Waterloo ON and another in Saskatoon. I won't go to Saskatoon, so Waterloo might be an option in some two years. Another option would be to go to Luther Seminary in Minneapolis, but I don't think the weather there is any better than here.

Yeah, from what I hear, Minnesota is one of the states where Canadians can feel right at home. Cold, snow, curling, hockey. They got it all.:D

Laurier, the university where the Lutheran seminary is based, is a nice little campus. The London UU fellowship's current contract minister is doing a doctorate there and I went to UW, the bigger, newer university up the street and paid WLU occasional visits. In fact, I grew up down the road in Kitchener.

Soon, if he takes all our advice @GiancarloZ will be so busy he won't have time to stop by here. ;)

I hope you do continue to join us Giancarlo! :)
I'll surely keep coming here :)
I sent an email to volunteer at a Senior residence, hope they answer it soon.
Also decided to join the choir at my new congregation - my first rehearsal will be today. And got a Christmas invitation from a dear person of my former congregation. Things are starting to move.

So you think that's a good area to live? How's the weather?

You got me thinking about the Granite Club again. This was the main entrance back then:

Yes, red carpeted, with shiny, polished brass handles and handrails. I liked going in the main entrance. And not being allowed to because I wasn't wearing a tie was silly. The side entrance was to the right, out of the photo. It was just a regular steel door. The security office is just to the right in this photo, between the main entrance and the side entrance. The small figure you see in this photo is probably wearing a green jacket, but the light isn't good.

They renovated 10 years ago. This is what it looks like now:

I think they even changed the location of the main entrance.

Either way, you can't afford to curl here. Also, the application process and background checks will take forever, then you have to have someone sponsor you. It is insane there.

Waterloo is a nice small city. A lot of German influences. Two good universities in Kitchener/Waterloo. An hour from both Toronto and London. But just as cold and snowy as the rest of south western Ontario. More snow than Toronto. It gets caught in the Lake Huron snow belt

So you think that's a good area to live? How's the weather?

I like it, though I moved away 30 years ago. Weather is similar to London but less snow since they are further from the lakes. So winter temps mostly below zero but above -10. Summers are generally nice, with maybe one or two heatwaves a year (back in my day, at least).

In the fall, you've got Oktoberfest for entertainment and there's Junior A hockey (Kitchener Rangers) if you're a sports fan and a good symphony orchestra and concert hall for the more cultural side of things. Great network of biking trails and some nice nature areas.

I can recommend an ELCIC church (Dad was ELCIC), too.

I think it is less German than in my youth, but I imagine you would still encounter more German than Portuguese language-wise.

It is fairly handy to Toronto, but has also become a major bottleneck on 401 so not as handy as when I was young.
