Dealing with hate

I really don't get how trying to understand how the elements and events in a persons life that shaped who they are (how did a neo-nazi become such) is a 'colonial' response. It's an empathic response if anything - but without being tolerant of the behaviour itself.

The colonial part is deciding what is "right" and trying to get the other person to change their views to the "right" ones.

How are you not fighting hate with hate? How're you doing with me?

I have tried to let you know where we agree. I'd really like to have a good discussion with you. I can't do that as long as you throw blame back at me.

You hate Trump, Dr Peterson, Steve Bannon......
I think Trump is a good entertainer...a very incompetent and dangerous POTUS. I think Dr.Peterson made a better classroom professor and should never have forayed into right wing political celebrity-dom. I really do not like what he is doing. I think Steve Bannon is a very manipulative, and dangerous man who is growing far right wing reactionary factions all over the world and I hope he is ignored and dismissed not listened to.

I didn't say that. I said, trying to understand how a neo-nazi got that way. There's nothing right about their views.

I think we have a duty to speak out against groups like neo-nazis, while still trying to understand how they got that way, and to know they are flawed humans too - and to offer better choices.

Maybe I misunderstood. This sounds like trying to correct their views.

Help me understand how I got this wrong.

Because (and I watched a different documentary about a female Muslim journalist who spent time with neo nazis while making her documentary) their bigotry was misplaced - a reaction to something else earlier in their lives, in some cases, and they needed a "foreign" scapegoat. I don't see how they can change if not offered better alternatives to do so. I don't see that as colonial (if anything the neo nazis are colonial in the extreme), but rehabilitative.

You want to offer better alternatives. That presumes you know better.....
I know that there are most certainly better alternatives to being a neo nazi! Don't you? Sheesh. Maybe they don't. Maybe it's a tribe, like a gang, where they felt they belong - but there are better alternatives. You and I both know that so please stop insulting me.

And you are going to change them?

I'm not saying being a neo-nazi is good for the record. I created this thread using the CBC program as one way to respond to hate. And yet, you say I'm wrong...... please explain.

What do you think about the original post in this thread? What do you think about a black man becoming friends with a member of the KKK?

That's fine if he can change their minds.

Otherwise, I would be careful if I were him that he isn't being used.

I don't think we are obligated to tolerate neo nazi views in society. We need to educate and provide alternatives where those views crop up - as with gangs. As well as educate and try to inoculate people from that kind of bigotry to begin with - not validate it. It's very similar to gangs, except neo nazis are far more political in that they help spread fascism.

There you go again. Did you actually read the article or listen to the program. You'd know the answer to that if you had.

They've been friends for years. Of course, you'd know that if you'd listened to the program.

This comment makes it sound like you don't believe people can change.

What does this have to with the topic of this thread?

Just a thought from the other side of our world.......
I commend Northwind for attempting to give us a positive post about human relationships.
It's refreshing....

So much of what I read and see these days -on all forms of media - seems to be an encouragement to dissent at best and hate speech at worst.

The latest offering we have on Oz t.v. is a so-called reality show where we see wedding proposals followed by angry parents/inlaws who happily give us their "opinions" on what is wrong about their child's choice. (message - it's okay to be bigoted and rude.)

That's why I get a bit upset when "my" people say nasty -and yes, vicious things about Donald Trump even. Attack the man's policies, but making personally derogatory statements about the man himself is 'off' in my book. It reminds me of Hilary Clinton and her "deplorables" comment.

The problem is - at what point do we obey our conscience and say, "No. What you are doing is wrong!" Not "all views are ok". It's one thing for parents to spout off about their kids' choice of partners - none of their business really, and that sort of voyeuristic tv is a problem of its own. The spread of the far right is a different thing, and it's everybody's business - and the only way I can love Trump is to pray he has his power diminished democratically in the midterms and that he is voted out next term. I do not have to have to feel warmly about him.

I'm very frustrated. I was hoping to have some kind of productive discussion and I end up feeling like I'm being accused of tolerating neo-nazi's. I raised an example about a black man and a member of KKK becoming friends who love and respect each other and get the "not all views are okay" speech. I asked for comment about that specific situation and got the spiel.

While I'm frustrated, I'm also not surprised. It would be nice though if @PilgrimsProgress could be respected with a proper answer to her question.
