Just about all presidents have had a craftiness that is not a sign of intelligence. Trump is (bluntly) crafty, and strongly reminiscent of Hitler in most of his views. (Though Hitler stuck to one woman.)
He certainly doesn't appear to be a reader. Nor, if you read his blogs, does he show any literary skill (to put it kindly.)
Can we please have an example of his cleverness in some issue he has handled?

It's just what he does. He'll take an unpopular opinion from those around him and run with it. Later, he'll claim he doesn't actually hold the opinion. Textbook Jae.
He managed to hypnotize his base, and became president. He's managed to manipulate and wiggle out of jeopardy all the way along. He may actually be smarter than the Clintons or Obamas, in a diabolical sorta way. I'd say he's smart. He's not an intellectual.

Here's how smart he is: He thought the Fox and Friends call went so well, he wants to make it a monthly thing:

If Trump wasn't smart, he wouldn't have fooled 1/2 of Americans, he wouldn't be elected, and he'd be out on his ear by now. Unfortunately.
He is smart enough to make slick lawyers feel that way. He always turns his ridiculousness into points for himself. And we laugh and say, "OMG what a tool!" And he keeps doing it, doesn't care, and he keeps on playing.

Oh, it doesn't take brains to fool 1/2 of Americans. They voted for Bush jr., Ronald Reagan. Besides, a high proportion of those were evangelicals. Hitler was a gifted speaker, but by no means an intellectual.
(Nor does it take brains to fool Canadians. Most of them have always voted either Liberal or Conservative, though both parties are obviously tools of the very wealthy.)

He knew how to play them to a "T", let's say. I am not happy about it, but I think the man is diabolically smart. We can laugh when he does stupid stuff, but I think we ought to keep in mind that he is diabolically smart.

Trump has really never articulated any policy. His vote was a vote AGAINST just about everything rather than a vote for.
mueller, though, knows his type. big league mob bosses, and the like. Those people are criminal masterminds. That's not good. Intelligence seriously misapplied. But they're not stupid.
He was a celebrity, he's a showman. He made himself a cult of personality, an anti-Clinton anti-Obama one, then he didn't have to articulate policy. His supporters were entranced.

Okay. I'm willing to concede he has a craftiness - as have the mob bosses I have known in my evil life. not sure I'd equate either with intellectual powers. I suppose, though, we have to recognize the possibility of evil intelligence.
