@airclean33 , the remark you quoted was a joke in response to chansen's comment about your typo. I don't actually think that giving money to a televangelist is the way to salvation.

As for my first post, that was hypothetical. I do not believe in God or Heaven as you conceive them so whether it is sola fides or sola gratia or whatever is moot. I was noting, however, that sola gratia makes sense given a certain concept of God. That has nothing to with what scripture says, which is a whole other kettle of fish.

It's actually worse. The neighbour is actually an atheist terrorist and he's building a nuclear bomb in his basement and he's short of money because he needs to buy more nuclear to kill more people in the name of no gods, and now you've just given him $100 for more nuclear.

When you don't listen to God, Christians die. Sometimes it's non-Christians, and that's not so bad, but usually it's Christians.
 
My father was not a Christian, but I sure heard him say enough times that if there was a heaven, he would sure be there before most professing Christians, pointing out what a bunch of hypocrites they tend to be, compared to him.
 
The bottom line is that "drunks" used to scam airclean and now he sees through them.

If my neighbour begged me for $100 for groceries, I'd suggest that she or one of her three working age sons get into one of their three newish cars, drive to my church (wondering why their own denomination wasn't helping them) and make the case to my minister as to why they needed money for groceries.

OTOH, it's a lovely idea to carry one of those "homeless kits" in your car, specifically for street people, with a toothbrush and toothpaste, a pair of new socks, a packet of gum, a bar of chocolate or an energy bar, a travel sized package of baby wipes, a $5 bill or a few toonies. At that level, who worries about where they spend their meagre coins, as long as it gets them safely through the long cold night.

This actually happened to me. I lent a friend $400 because they said they needed it for food and stuff. Well he liked to drink also so goodbye money. I haven't seen him or the money in over two years. So here I am blaming myself for being too naive and too soft to say no when all along it was god's fault for not warning me that he was a drunk and would not pay you back. Thanks for letting me no that airclean.

There's a smug, condescending self-assurance that certain Christians effect that tends to drive folks like me and your Dad to think that way. Something along the lines of, "How could an a-hole like that get into heaven just because they believe the right stuff?" OTOH, the humility I see in someone like Steven or John goes a long way towards counter-balancing that.

Resisting evil, spiritual battles, ruling over temptations. I'm no saint, by any stretch of the imagination, but I honestly don't feel very tempted to do even slightly bad things on a regular basis. And I certainly don't think of 'religion' in any way as 'making me behave well'. With apologies for an over-blunt communication style, I largely feel that I get through life making reasonably kind choices on a regular basis.

well that is because Mans standard of Good/evil is not the same as the Creators, you yourself admit that you do not do on a regular basis, that is true for most of humanity, yet that still gives room for the "Not so regular bad things"

You've lost me here. "Evil powers?" Kidnapped? When did this happen? Is this coincident with the transition of humanity from hunter-gatherer to settled agriculturalist in the fertile crescent some 6,000 years ago?

The state has been murdering people in large quantities and small, depending on what you're looking for and where you're looking, for a long time. Death Row is full of people who are not white, people who grew up poor, people with very low IQs. Right now, the State of Florida is sentencing my friend Lynn to certain death by refusing her healthcare. As Graeme is fond of pointing out, the U.S. Military-Industrial Complex murders hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians every year. The only thing that really varies is 'how' we kill people. Is the electric chair more humane than the cross? Lethal injection over the guillotine?

Maybe he did .It was difficult to make out what the big guy was saying at the time because of all the static on the line. Next time you call god don't use your mobile the reception is terrible and PS. you still owe me $400. Don't worry you can pay me in your own time.:whistle:

The Spirit of God can help us to discern, I agree. We could all improve on our hearing her voice, though, and responding as she gives us wisdom. At times, I believe, she may not directly tell us what to do. She may feel that we know enough from God's Word and/or through other means to understand how we should act. If we see our neighbor hungry and unable to afford food, we should respond in a loving way. If we know or believe that our neighbor is addicted to alcohol or something else, giving cash for groceries may not be the kindest thing we can do. Offering to go shopping with them or to the local food bank may be the far better route.

Hi... Do you suppose that the Samaritan who stopped to help his "neighbour" will be accepted in the household of God? How about the two religious fellas who had "more important" things on their minds. I suspect that the latter would judge the former for failing to meet certain religious standards.

And, what does Matthew's picture of judgement day tell us about what matters most to God?

--Hi Chansen --I chose Neighbor chanson, because to a Christian it is very Important that we take care of our neighbors. Many Christians don't understand who" there neighbors our. Let alone how to help them". The church I believe have mixed followers up . With the wrong ideas, they have been teaching we should be taken care of the world.
 
Well, there you go again, Christians. God doesn't want you taking care of the world.
