No, you'd be surprised at the Bernie types - many are progressive young women - now getting seats in state and local gov't and they will infuse the house and senate with better democracy. In one or two more election cycles they will be the Democratic Party and they will have a lot of support. millennials are largely progressives. But Fox won't tell you that. They want boys and men to turn fascist. They're fixated on Obama and the Clintons still and pretending there's still a competition with them because it gets their base all riled up.

Lesson learned. They are not going by polls. Polls would've not predicted the progressive wins they've been seeing because people did it by good old low key fundraising and going around to coffee shops and knocking on doors.

I know in the the 60s that the Dems changed direction on civil rights. Republicans love to remind the left that the Dems used to be racist. Everybody used to be racist. The Republican Party carries the bulk of that title now.

yea, but it took Trump a Republican to signed a lifetime foreign-lobbying ban for members of his administration , as well as a five-year ban for all other lobbying.

Does he fit that description? He should ask himself. Some people - like certain factions in Europe - are not shy to call themselves fascists these days. I'm no longer shy to say I'm a democratic socialist.



That's the description of fascism, in the prior post. It's not my fault if some people actually fit it.

To be frank, you don't know Pontifex well enough to know if he actually fits it. And it's not a term that should be thrown around or applied to people lightly. I am not a fan of his (in fact he's on my ignore list much of the time) but I would draw the line at equating him with the likes of Hitler and Mussolini. Misuse or inappropriate use of a word like "fascist" makes people less likely to take it seriously when it is appropriate. Boy who cried wolf and all that.

No I don't. You put me on that spot. That's why I said he'd have to answer himself. He's not Hitler or Mussolini. I know that. He thinks I'm a fascist - or only a step away. But I don't fit the description.

People need to remember that those who elected Hitler were not Hitler either. Most of them - many, anyway - probably wouldn't have believed how bad he'd become. They probably fell for the antisemetic "other" propaganda, much like the anti-immigrant propaganda in Italy and Hungary and other places today because that is a fascist tactic - fearing for their jobs but not looking at the capitalist causes of the poor economy - but never imagined that it would lead to the full scale murderous regime it led to. I wouldn't be surprised if several of those who initially voted for Hitler ended up hiding Jews in their attics once they realized what they'd allowed to happen.

In fairness, I did not interpret that as Kimmio suggesting that Pontifex is a fascist. I saw them having a disagreement over how fascism is defined, and Kimmio posted a definition as part of their disagreement, directing the definition at Pontifex, but not an accusation.

Actually, aside from the flareup she and Northwind have had I have no real problems with Kimmio's comments in this thread and while I don't entirely agree with every example of her charges of "fascism" she's absolutely right to point to the rise of the far right in Europe. Trump is a horse of a different colour. I'm not sure what he is. I'm not sure that he knows what he is. He's a narcissist and an egotist who likes the attention he gets from being president and from the outrageous things he says and does but he's sufficiently self-absorbed that I'm not convinced that he has a real grasp of the impact his words and actions have. His presence has certainly encouraged and empowered the US far right.

I think Trump's self absorption has allowed people like Bannon and Steven Miller to have sufficient power to push things to the far right. As long as they flatter him he could care less. Look at him and Kim Jung Un. He has a bromance with him as long as the flattery is there. But he'll hate on anybody who critiques him.

Yeah, after a bunch of his advisors have been convicted of foreign dealings. The verdict is not in yet as to how much more there is we don't know, but Mueller knows.

Real conversations allow someone to take the time to listen, to ponder, to respond.

People can take all the time they want to respond. I am not putting time limits on their responses to me.

Mendalla put me on the spot to respond to something I didn't say. A non response might have looked like I was agreeing with him. He said I called Pontifex a fascist anyway when I said it was up to Pontifex to answer for himself. It was almost like a set up. So I'm going to have a swift response to that.
