The Rise of Corporate Fascism

In Metro Vancouver you can’t leave the Skytrain stations if you are still inside the terminal when your ticket time runs out after you’ve arrived at your destination you need a new ticket to go in and out through the gates - unless you buy another ticket or have a debit-like prepaid card that works like a fob, with money left on it. If you don’t have that and no money for a new ticket, you’re stuck - you can’t even leave. Another thing that disproportionately affects poor people. They need to change that. Instead they’re beefing up measures to have more transit security monitor people sneaking through - like letting someone else open the gate and going in behind them might get somebody arrested who is just trying to get out. The fob like tickets/ cards only let you swipe once, one way - so one time I swiped on the wrong side - from the gate beside me (I was new at it) so the gate next to me opened. There’s only one wide gate I can go through - I paid I wasn’t skipping fare - so a man helped me out and swiped his ticket and I followed him through. To do that nowdays might create a humiliating and potentially dangerous situation. And so could trapping someone in who is volatile.

Evil is among us ... know thyself ... yet there is an emotional urge that causes us to know nothing ... it seems to travel in the search for power as thought slowly sinks in ... a humble process ... going down? Follies ... fall ease ... so convenient in English, with a spin ...

It is a vast spread of God knows what ... legalese? Fey and feminine words that fly ... now ID'd by an X denoting the great unknown! Clean sweeps ...

Fine, but you're not forced.
  • You can wait for a cashier
  • You can go to a different store
  • You can by online.

I did wait for a cashier. I considered just leaving my item on the counter and leaving. Next time I will go to another store. This happened to be convenient. I prefer to buy in person and support sticks and bricks. I support local where I can. That includes where I can afford to do that financially.

They put these gates up here, too, I noticed them, but why should it bother me that you can only go in one way and out the other? That beeping shopping cart would be another story. I don’t think my store has those yet.

Making a woman in a scooter go a different way and questioning her on her purchases is bad manners. What happens if the person doesn't have much energy or mobility? Do they get cut any slack? That might have been a problem for me when I was getting chemo.

Thankfully we have grocery stores here that are island owned. They don't have self-checkouts and they treat people decently. Their security measures are more humane. I don't have to support Loblaws and Walmart.

To business extremist you are either an Innis or oudist ... no medium allowed as you are not allowed contemplation ... beyond the hard edifice ... Baskar Vilas?

Vile Anis ... like that Lynn Song!

Shoppers Drug Mart is at least strongly pushing customers into the self checkout. I was at one today and had to ask about a real cashier.

Absolutely. I am not forced, unless I really must have that particular item right then. I actually left SDM when they removed the real cashiers, leaving my purchase behind, went to Rexall, got exactly the same item, for a dollar cheaper, served by a real cashier. I sent an e-mail to the SDM where this occurred. I received no response, so I've been NOT shopping at SDM AND have been sharing my "customer service story" at every opportunity. Since I'm a yakky bitch who works in retail, I hope I have had a small affect...

That sounds like a danger in case of a fire or need for evacuation

I’m rethinking maybe you can go through the gate the other way if you go in and then decide to leave that terminal before your fare expires (but definitely not after, as you need to pay a new fare) - I don’t remember if I ever have - but you can’t use the same ticket to go through the same set of gates. Leaves no room for mistakes - like disabled people who have trouble with the one gate they need, or people trying to leave when their fare just expired. They are doing it to catch people skipping fare, but that makes it more dangerous overall.

There are emergency exits (I’m pretty sure) but if there’s a volatile person panicking it’s not safe - you can’t just use those anytime to get out. And they can’t use them. It probably happens not infrequently that someone loses their temper and can’t leave, or because their ticket just expired before trying to leave and they can’t buy another one. The tickets don’t show the time. The only way to know if there’s a few minutes left is to swipe you ticket or card. Well I suppose you could set an alarm for yourself if able but I’m not sure exactly how many minutes - it’s 90 or 95 minutes. Longer depending on number of zones purchased.
