Gospel

After their excellent piece on the blues, Nahre and LA tackle another musical form that is closely related: Gospel. Nahre seems a little out of her element, but LA is a gospel drummer at heart and is quite at home here. Another terrific story of music and those who make it.

LA Buckner is originally from Minneapolis and he goes home in the first show of 2020 to look at the Minneapolis sound that began in the late seventies. The most famous exponent was, of course, Prince, who came out of the Minneapolis scene, but the sound became very influential for a time in the eighties and nineties.

Sound Field has been rather quiet this summer, but they just dropped a beauty of an episode. Today marks the 100th birthday of the late Charlie "Bird" Parker, who managed to revolutionize jazz, and popular music in general, during his brief span on this Earth (he died at 34). Besides being instrumental in the creation of the bebop style of jazz, his style and musical innovations have been felt in music right down to modern forms like hip-hop. I'll let LA Buckner fill you in.

And just in case you're wondering what the fuss is about.

Parker performing with another sax great, Coleman Hawkins. Hawkins is the one who plays first.

And on his own with the great Buddy Rich on drums.

Note that both of these were recorded in studio first, then filmed so they are basically "lip synching". It was due to technical limitations of the time rather than any attempt to deceive.
