I was reading something that mentioned roofs of buildings, and I thought, “That looks weird. They misspelled rooves. Must be an American thing.” But, after looking it up, apparently not. Rooves is listed by a few dictionaries as being archaic British English out of use since the 1800’s. Really? I seem to remember being taught that rooves was correct. That’s how I’d say it, and if I’ve ever written it before now, that’s how I’d write it. It seems like I’d remember that I learned roofs. It doesn’t make sense. It’s like one of those Berenstain/ Bernstein Bears things.
How about you?
