SOmeone I would call a comic giant, passed away today at 94

WHat is your favourite Newhart memory?
THe closing scene of the series "Newhart" is one of, if not the, best series closers ever IMO

We had one of his albums. I loved his one sided conversations. The driving instructor skit had us howling with laughter. I also liked the ending of the Newhart Show, the one with the inn. It was epic.

Those became influential, too. I have seen other comics and sketches using that format. Robot Chicken even did a Star Wars version with the Emperor receiving a call from Darth Vader about the destruction of the Death Star, all shown from the Emperor's side.

I was a big fan of the eighties Newhart. Of course, part of its success was the amazing supporting cast around him and his interactions with them (Tom Poston, Julia Duffy, Peter Scolari, Mary Frann were his co-stars). His earlier show was on when I was a kid but I don't recall seeing it other than later in syndication.

Brilliant, funny comedian. Sad to see him go but, wow, 94.

The one and only time the "it was all a dream" thing actually worked and only because of the context and because it was played for laughs, not to retcon a bad episode/season.

He was awesome on Big Bang Theory too. His character's relationship with Sheldon was perfect.

I took a pass on BBT. Never quite clicked with me the few times I tried it. Not even sure I knew he was in it. A recurring guest role, I take it?

Appeared as in essence ... striking to physicians ... scientists of the hard variety!

Freud would call it a vapor ...

He appeared as Sheldon's hero from a science program he watched as a child. Sheldon got to meet him. He was in a few episodes.

BBT was awesome. It did take a bit to get into it. It got better as the characters developed and extra characters added.

It was so catastrophically funny that it could wear on you to take a break from it before you realized the cryptic tragedy of the competing sides ... somebody must be beaten and kicked ouda 'ere! Thus the Ode's ... Theo de's ... of mostly nothing ... in essence!
