Plant Based Food

It looks so pretty it’d almost be a shame to eat it. It’s art. But one order of 22 pieces would be enough for 2 meals/ 2 people to share. Sushi is actually pretty filling. It’s going on my list. Maybe I can try it this summer.

Rice and beans, including soy, make a complete protein. They also use fruit and vegetable skins and pulp to add “meaty” bulk. It’s processed but ground beef for example also uses a process. Skinning animals and cutting up meat, involves a process. Plucking chickens is a process - often in large assembly line facilities. Ethically, I actually do feel better about eating plant based because most people, unless they are hunters, buy meat processed in large factories/ facilities. Even free range farms involve slaughtering and processing - though it’s less unethical it’s still gross to think about, imho. Right now I’m not vegetarian or vegan - but I have to not think about what I’m actually eating to enjoy eating meat. Processed into patties or not. Seeing videos of chicks getting chucked along an assembly line and falling into machines was sickening. Cattle penned up for slaughter - it’s less appealing to me than plant processing facilities. When you cook a meal - peel, chop, mix ingredients together, and cook them - that’s processing. Making food dishes involves processing. A veggie patty is a food dish, basically. And when it’s done on a large scale with plants, no conscious beings get harmed. Also it’s better for the environment.

I didn’t know until I was looking up studies that Einstein said this. I do remember years ago, David Suzuki saying we need to eat from as low on the food chain as possible - plants and, if animals, insects. Suzuki isn’t Einstein, mind you. I’m not big on the idea of eating insects. I’d prefer plant based meat alternatives.

Also - I lost weight more easily when I wasn’t eating meat. I tended to try dairy alternatives more often too when I was in that mind-set. Unhealthy, fattening food started to taste gross. But I can fall off that wagon pretty quickly, too.

When I say 'processed' I tend to mean the items that are basically made already. Burger patties, frozen meals and the like. These things typically contain too much salt, sugar and/or fat to be considered healthy. Often also have flavourings and colour enhancers. I bear this in mind but I'm not fanatical about the whole thing.

With process there are openings for many unknown industrialized additives! The great unknown is thus expanded upon ... I read last week of an individual that believed there was little food value in industrialized product! It is questionable given the advantages taken ... I was told yesterday questions were HS ... product of the 4 horsemen!

Feel the stir ... a mire sensationalism!

It was a miserable rainy day and I had money set aside to order food so I ordered vegan sushi. I was really curious since I found out about it the other day. I had California roll, for the sake of comparison. It was really good. I couldn’t tell the difference between it and California roll made with crab. If I didn’t know I wouldn’t have guessed there was anything different about it. The price was just as good, too.

That I would like to try, haven't seen anything like that before. I do get vegetarian sushi - no alternatives in it as well as the (cooked) beef and chicken rolls.

Minced cooked crab has a mild flavour anyway so I could see it being one of the easier ones to imitate with plant protein. And vegan mayo mixed into food tastes no different ( I’ve bought it before and does taste a little bit different just plain because there’s no egg in it, but it’s much better than, say, miracle whip).

I looked through the list, I don't really see any offering a fish alternative. Most sre normal sushi places that have veggie rolls as well. That is something I do get but am a bit cautious about where from due to cross contact.

We had a couple of exceptional vegan meals in Portugal. At Plant Base in Lisbon we had the best nachos ever and a good vegan pizza. At Sugar Rabbit in Albufeira, we had great chocolate pancakes with strawberries and Mango sorbet.

In Halifax the big talk seems to be kelp. I don’t think I would be into that. I don’t like the salty seeweeds.

I like Japanese seaweed salad (not sure what kind it is). Mrs. M used to use seaweed in some Chinese dishes, too, but we haven't had it in years. I think maybe Little M didn't like it or something.
