Why do people go to public events, like concerts, and turn into obnoxious louts? I mean, seriously, does having fun really have to involve getting drunk and harassing the talent on stage?
What prompted this?
Floor Jansen was playing a festival in the Netherlands yesterday and by the account of fans who were there, it was not a stellar moment for that festival. There were technical issues, too, but the biggest problem was that the crowd was drunk and rowdy. They apparently even threw beer at the stage. Mercifully, the group of stalwarts from Floorworld who more or less turn out for every concert were in the front couple rows. So at least she had two rows of friendly faces, many of whom she has met in person at meet and greets and past gigs, directly in front of her.
I sometimes criticize Ontario's somewhat draconian booze laws, but the requirement that alcohol only be served and consumed in a designated area at events (which usually means a beer tent) rather than having people drinking all over at least blunts some of the potential for things like this. We're not immune, of course, and a lot depends on event security and local cops to enforce the law, but at least there's controls in place on paper.
But still, why should that even be necessary? Is this our "sinful" side in action? Why do some people seem to need to act out in public like this?
