Seriously. Parasite, by popular Korean director Bong Joon-ho, won not only best international film (new name for best foreign language), but also best picture, best screenplay, and best director. Joon-ho was already well-known for previous films like The Host, Okja, Snowpiercer, and more, but for him to make a big breakthrough like this was not entirely expected.

That said, none of the cast were nominated for acting awards, which mostly went to "usual suspects" like Laura Dern and Brad Pitt. Don't get me wrong. Laura and Brad are great actors. But when you're honouring a film that widely, it seems a bit off that no acting awards were involved.

I hadn't noticed that but we did come late to the party. He probably had a good party last night. He was pretty excited. I hadn't heard of this movie. Is it being shown in North America too? The audience seemed quite excited about the win.

It may already be on streaming here. Some folks on my writing board were watching it on the weekend as Oscar prep. Just not sure which streaming service got it but I know Netflix had some of Joon-ho's earlier work back when I was a subscriber.

I havent seen it but I was listening to CBC talking about it today. One person said it reminded them of the Japanese movie The Shoplifter (which I have seen and enjoyed) in that it was how the have nots within society did what they have to do to survive.

A few movie theaters here in Toronto are still showing it. I saw it recently and thought it was an extremely clever movie. Lots to think about and discuss with others afterwards. I saw it as both a satire and a morality tale. In some places it is very funny and there are other scenes which play more like horror. It is worth seeing for sure & it is not easily classified as to genre.
