Self reflection can't be a hard science. If they're so pragmatic they're not interested in it - can't recognize it's a tool for self reflection and why that might be helpful or necessary - they're wasting my time.

So MBTI is the only valid form of self-reflection in your opinion? What about Enneagram, which I mentioned upthread? What about myriad other tools for doing such? You are badly overvaluing MBTI and badly undervaluing all the other forms of self-reflection. People were self-reflecting for decades and centuries and millennia before MBTI existed. Why do we need it today? Frankly, rejecting someone because they don't agree with your approach to self-reflection seems like something that needs a bit of self-reflection itself. And, no, I can't tell you either my MBTI type or my Enneagram type. And I have done lots of self-reflection over the years. They are a help, but not necessary.

It's not "needed" for self reflection it's just more thorough and gives shape to that reflection. If somebody thinks they never need any

It's one of the best known ones. It, like others, gives shape and direction to the self reflection.

Everybody needs some kind of psychological therapy, or tools, imo, that helps them self reflect. Everybody. Like everybody needs a dentist.

To blow it off if I was interested in learning about their personality, discussing mine, and to have a frame of reference - is a sign that they are not very compatible with me. People who aren't even interested because it's too "pseudosciencey" aren't good for me and we'll end up resenting each other.

(The article is from 2012 - the writer is a science and data guy, neuroscientist, Paul King )

"The MBTI’s detractors argue that the test is “random” because 50% of people who take the test a second time get a different result. This is like saying that the SAT test is random because people never get the same SAT score twice.

What the “50%” finding is really saying is that most people who take the test will score near the middle on at least one dimension. So on the second taking, that dimension could tip one way or the other when thresholded.

Scientific evaluation of MBTI has found its reliability to be “acceptable” with worse than 80% test-retest reproducibility occurring only in the T-F dimension for male test takers. [1] MBTI has also been systematically compared to the more modern and rigorous NEO-PI personality test used in psychology research and found to be fairly well correlated along several dimensions but less complete than NEO-PI. [2]"

Also, in any event they do the laborious work dentists are paid not to do, they get paid less than dentists, the experienced ones could learn as much as dentists on the job ... and they're usually women.
If my dentist would suggest the dental hygienist is now going to fix my cavities or pulling my teeth, I would be out of there. I am sure a dentist would not be as good at cleaning my teeth as a dental hygenist, after all they have different training. Similar with Rehab assistants and Physiotherapists. There is a reason why one has to go to university and the other one has a much shorter training.

Hygienists are more focused. They aren't expected to do extractions and resections and the other fun stuff I've been going through with my bad tooth. They do cleanings and examinations and that's about it. And assist the dentist during the more complex procedures. Dentists can do cleanings but they are often not so great, as you suggest. Lack of experience, I suspect, since they usually leave it to the hygienists nowadays.

I wouldn't. I think I'd rather have a nice hygienist, with a good chair side manner, do it than an emotionally detached dentist. They do the prep work for it. If they've seen it done dozens of times up close, they could do it.

Why are we talking about dentists? This came up because I made an analogy about my previous job. And Carolla quipped about it, as a distraction from what I was actually talking about. She just had to stop the discussion to put me in my place, I guess. Whenever you see an opportunity to invalidate me, my experience, and put me in my place - this crowd will do that. There are a particular few that you've learned that from over the years.

We all know there are work environments where the superiors do much less and get paid more. They might have more formal (as opposed to experiential) education but in lots of cases, if they've been in a cushy job awhile, or get off on power, it's outdated and they just use it as a status marker. Nobody remembers everything they learned in academia that they learned several years ago. They preserve and expand their knowledge with experience. Hygienists are capable of the same.

Yep, I wouldn’t want the OR nurse take out my gallbladder because she has watched the surgeon do it for two years.

I looked at that list of what one is supposed to “ hate”- honestly- show me the one person who loves those negative traits? ( just read all the others and tell me you like these)
There are several things I don't mind. They don't really bother me: procrastination, doing things slowly, pronunciation grammar and spelling errors, rambling, idealism without action (imo expression of an ideal is taking action to have others consider it.) I know people who don't mind social surprises (I mind them), they even enjoy them.

I want to point out that the MBTI is used in the context employment counselling as a tool for the client. It is not for the employer. So, they don’t discriminate with it. I’m not sure why people got that idea. I don’t remember a client ever putting it on their resume or anything. I wouldn’t recommend that. Then again, others here presumed to know more than me about a field I worked in and they didn’t...just because they can. It’s Ableist, you know? You know I have a disability - so you subconsciously, or consciously think it’s okay to disrespect and invalidate my experiences in favour of your assumptions. It’s mansplaining, but for disabilities. Its worse. It’s demoralizing when it happens over and over and nobody notices or cares. I’m a lesser person obviously if my experience doesn’t count and others’ does. Nobody would tell somebody here without a disability that they don’t know about their profession. It’s a really personal attack. Chansen told me I was a terrible advocate. He said it over and over. He sought to invalidate everything I said. Northwind told me to listen to him. She said nothing to stop him. Thats when I had a critique of her but shouldn’t have said it to her. It’s amazing, looking back, it was so clear. Even people I respect here did treated me like I don’t have a valid voice or background. It was awful of you, and awful for me. These are side notes - not on topic, sorry - but it’s pretty clear this place was never good for me and if I am reacting, that’s what I am reacting to. Years of pain and people being s**tty. Seeing Corolla’s posts, subtly dismissive like I know nothing, triggered me. Because I have experience in this area but it wasn’t taken seriously. Nothing I’ve ever said was considered as respectfully as you would someone else...and that’s because I have a disability. After awhile I just fought back, spat back. It made no difference one way or the other.

It may be “pseudosciencey” to some of you, but it’s some people’s job to administer these types of tests, and it helps give people direction. Usually when people are unemployed they’re feeling down and directionless. If it helps with that at all, that’s also a good reason to use it.

Enough is enough. It’s been toxic and damaging. I have to pick up the pieces left of me, my integrity, and move on from here.

And I hope Jae is okay. I’ve worried about him. Reach out to him. Only the council can do that. He wasn’t that bad. He was childish at times but not mean. People got way too upset with him for mostly stupid reasons. There have been meaner and more trollish characters here who got a pass. As long as they found someone to target who wasn’t you, you laughed at it.

I hope you improve yourselves. You have plenty of room to do that. I’m going to get on with my own life.

I have about 4 years of post secondary - at least, if professional development courses at a college are included and a continuing studies arts and social justice course at UBC - but not enough of the right credits for a degree. For those of you who think degrees make you special. I was assessed by a vocational psychologist twice - legit, licensed psychologists whose job it is to do comprehensive psych-voc / intelligence assessments... and the first time I was told I should pursue a PhD. Never got there. Didn’t have the support I needed to do that. I had to pay rent. I’d already taken out student loans for 2 years of general arts and social sciences credits. I had one year of applied communications credits also - that was a name for broadcast journalism studies - it was very hands on and there was no disability advocacy then. There were things that I couldn’t keep up with. I dropped it. I worked for several years instead, got into market research. The next time, several years later - looking to go back to school, I was given an assessment that put me at a grade 18 level (that psych-voc I was given measures in grades). Twelve being the top of high school. 18 being Masters level. That was without a degree, and before I went into SSW studies and the start of a career. I was at that level because of what I had learned from school and life. I will never believe someone with a narrow degree is necessarily smarter than some people without, but with some education and lots of diverse life experience. Never. Through work and life, I’ve met too many near geniuses who are struggling and people with degrees who have not much life experience, and mediocre intellect.

Now, I’m back at square one. And if I’m fortunate, I’ll get to square 2. Tired of being demeaned. I know I have value even if you don’t.

If somebody could’ve supported me through a PhD I would’ve done it. But I was on my own, no trust fund or anything like that, paying rent. A lot of people take their supports for granted and don’t consider that they’d never be where they are without them - and they don’t have the same discriminatory barriers to contend with. I resent people like that thinking they are so much wiser. That in itself, can be ableist.

As for MBTI. Look into it. It’s not a horoscope. Everybody has a good side and a bad side, with their traits. It’s pretty accurate. Not 100% but close. My INFP negative side is as accurate as the good side.

And the MB test is time sensitive ... as the profile changes ... depending on quarks, etc. ... as illustrative on an article somewhere on the internet on a Russian Scientist that placed his head in a proton beam ... proto Neick? It is just another word ...

Was Mark Twain a quirk or a quark in the quantum pasteur ...

Years ago, about my earliest days in Sem, I said, "...they had us do a number of different tests and assessments including a stress test - a genogram - FIRO-B - and the MBTI-II."

The only result I still remember is my MBTI. I can't even recall what a genogram and FIRO-B are. The other personality test I've done is True Colors, in which I'm a Green-Blue. From what the practitioner told me, that's a rare type

Never heard of True Colours myself. I have done some personality profile type exercises in the past but, to be honest, I don't even remember my results. Enneagram is the one that was all the rage with an online community that I briefly associated with but I never did the exercise.

Rare is a really thin state of affairs ... like meme brae 'n ... some humans never get over it ... vacuous? Something deficient? Depends on position ... Pede?
