Is it Volunteering?

Actually, I do find the comparison with “work” appropriate. While I am using skills some others might not have when volunteering, I find it comparable that it is a “job” where the individual is not irreplaceable- as it is at work.
If I am doing something for friends or family, our relationship makes me unique.

If I do a professional service for someone that I normally charge for, I consider that part of volunteer work. For me, that currently consists of two things.

I teach my granddaughter English using Zoom.

I lead the English ministry service for adults at my church

I think volunteering in the conventional sense, happens anywhere where people give their time and money to help other people. But most importantly I think it’s when they devote their passion - or their love and commitment - to something for the greater good.

I've knit some hats to donate to the cancer clinic or to give to friends who are going through chemo. I get to knit and then not have to find a space here for it. I like that people can enjoy them. That may be volunteering. It's also a way for me to enjoy my hobby.

As "velle" there is more to the reiteration ... something to wish, or will for wholly ... thus the search stretches out ...

With the exception of those that wish to know nothing as knowledge gets in the way of WILL!

I agree with Kimmio & like Northwind's example above. Interestingly, this clip popped into my google alerts! I love the Chase the Chill initiative & ran it for a number of years in my own community. A simple act of love of neighbour, people contributing to the common good. It was a challenge for some who wanted to ensure the 'worthiness' of the people who would pick up the items - I suppose a part of that charitable mindset, with the biases I mentioned earlier. Interesting that in the clip & article, I don't think the word 'volunteer' is mentioned at all. Just an observation, not a judgement.

We have several yarn ministries. A mitten tree in December, which also accepts hats and scarves. A red scarves for AIDS in November, when red scarves get draped on outside trees, and an on-going prayer shawl ministry. I cannot imagine a human "unworthy" of warmth, but okay...

Our congregation has a prayer shawl basket. I have a wrap on the go that will end up there.

Prayer Shawl ministries are indeed important, and appreciated by those receiving the shawls.
