Haven't seen that but I read quite a bit about it in the IT press when it happened. Idiots. How could you not realize something like that could boomerang on your own networks?

Even this new one and WannaCry are based on code stolen from the NSA. Talk about being shot with your own gun.:rolleyes:

Whos is numerous enough to carry sufficient knowledge for success? If the authorities could only get it together ... basically small stuff ...
Are viruses small things? Tis all in the detailing ...

He actually got involved with the talking
Until his spidey sense started tinglin
And then he started askin questions...
The guy stayed in character the whole time apparently and even had backup actors...
Wow. What a mind blow job.

I just got a call today from someone claiming to b from CRA. Checked the # out online and the first hit was a whole slew of complaints of the exact same thing.

Start with the hat.

The call will end quicker and guarantee that you are removed from the call-back list.

Unless somebody comes up with some Punch Imlach scam deliberately targetting hapless Leaf fans.
 
It's possble that my laptop has Ben hacked.

For quite some time Now, the screen has Ben freezing up.

Now, the antivirus has stoppd working. And today I was unable to connct to the internet.

I start a new online course this coming Monday. I have high hopes that things will be okay by then.
 
So weird - we watched CTV news tonight at suppertime - no mention of the bank thing.
 
I first heard about it through IT news sources, but have seen it in the Globe and CBC.
 
this is the nub of the issue methinks, quoted from the CBC article:

Easier to use technology...

There is a term used to denote how easy an app or such is to use. Its called friction.

The ideal app is a frictionless app. One that operates without much concern or input.

Whatever leads to less friction is good. Even if that includes not hiring human beings (because we r so friction laden and slow and such...we have feelings and loyalty and trust...and families...)

So an app can b designed...and then sold to some huge company...

And a lot of times there is no real concern for the user. Just make as much money as possible.

It explains why my branch, my home branch where I started banking, has gone all "apple store". Because they want to lessen friction.

I have been getting emails with names that are similar to people on my email list. Have I been hacked or have they? What can I do about it?
 
This happens to me too from time to time - sometimes even the name is accurate, but when I hover the cursor over the name it clearly gives a different e-mail - so spam. I just block & delete. Will be interested to hear from our resident 'experts'.

Could be someone else who knows you and those other contacts being hacked. Malware often inserts fake addresses in the From: field based on the contact list of the infected computer rather than using that computer's address. Helps obfuscate the source of the spam. Usually if it's you that's hacked, it doesn't send to you, just uses your contacts to send to others.

That said, it wouldn't hurt to make sure your A-V is up to date and run a scan. If someone in your household or circle of friends is technically adept, maybe a run with Malwarebytes or similar as well (software that specifically focusses on finding things like Trojan horses, keyloggers, and other non-viral malware).

I mostly use my IPAD, no AV on that. Or, can I get one for IPAD?
Have malwarebyte on my computer, but rarely turn on my computer.

Not sure about AV for iPad. Most of the usual suspects (Avast, Avg, etc.) are out for Android. Apple devices tend to be fairly virus resistant, even the computers.
