Tuesday, December 3rd is Giving Tuesday.

It is described as "Giving Tuesday is based on the idea of "radical generosity", which is the idea that the suffering of others should be as intolerable as our own".

If you were on the elevator with someone, and had 30 seconds to share with them your reflections on why you give, what to give, and who you recommend to give to, what would you say?

Love to read in the comments your pitch.

Bette, I had a tough conversation recently, where someone was implying/suggesting that the foodbank has no controls, and people just go there for food, coz they can. "Look at those international students", they cited. (and I knew what they were referring to.

It was a tough conversation, as there was lots of "them" "they". (Look at the comments to the youtube video as an example)

How do you respond to folks?

PS. Foodbank is on my list. If anything, I may need to bump our amounts due to the crap that I am reading out there.

Some sage old philosopher said feed my children .... many pious say they do not deserve anything because they cannot, or willnot work ... now given the examples!! Some say it is a hard line and not to cross those who laid it down ... then there's that other way ...

I wouldn't say anything.....especially since I wouldn't know their circumstances and I wouldn't risk shaming them.
I give what I can anonymously.....
I hate seeing that some people are filming those suffering and showing how they were helped, on tik toc clips.

Just give anywhere it's needed or if an area of need resonates within you.

We delivered cheques to our carefully selected charities a couple of days ago. A couple of initiatives received money from us earlier this year and were delighted to get some more. Our choice for our major donations are the Food Bank, the school food programme, the sheltered workshop and Group Homes, and a support charity that assists the local struggling folks (mainly Indiginous). There are also some low income people who use us as a temporary 'bank', they borrow small sums and pay back when they get some more money.

We are grateful that we usually have some money left at the end of each month. The amount increased when our younger generations decided to cancel Christmas gifts to family. That money goes into our charitable giving.

It's been found the poor give more often than the wealthy
If you're not already familiar with it - you'd probably be interested in the work of Dr. Ruby Payne regarding 'the hidden rules of social class'. It's quite fascinating.
I'm also reading The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist - some interesting insights there for sure.

I give because I have sufficient and it is important to me to share what I have; living in a way that recognizes & responds to needs of others is foundational to me as a disciple. Those 'needs' can be widely variable.

The times I give are also variable - some donations (ie food bank) are made monthly; some mark a special occasion; some memorialize others who were important to me; some are instead of 'gifts' at Xmas or birthdays.

When my financial situation was more limited, I gave through service (and still do) to groups that are meaningful to me.

Yes, food banks are so important. But we need to recognize they were never meant to be permanent. Political advocacy to relieve poverty and food scarcity is crucial.

I struggle a bit with the collections of staple items for Food Bank donations. Usually this translates into cans and packets of less healthy food. We give cash to enable the Food Bank to negotiate good prices for meat, vegetables and fruit. They appreciate it and say so. They also appeal for feminine supplies, soap, shampoo and toothpaste. All important but often forgotten.

Am not planning on giving anything special on 2412.03. That said, I might, if I see any good organisation collecting money out in public that day. We have to be careful here in Korea. There are a lot of cults out and about who don't mind taking funds.

I give fairly regularly (10% of my income) to my church

I should likely have explained elevator speech.

From wiki

elevator pitch, elevator speech, lift speech, or elevator statement is a short description of an idea, product, or company that explains the concept in a way such that any listener can understand it in a short period of time. This description typically explains who the thing is for, what it does, why it is needed, and how it will get done. When explaining an individual person, the description generally explains one's skills and goals, and why they would be a productive and beneficial person to have on a team or within a company or project. An elevator pitch does not have to include all of these components, but it usually does at least explain what the idea, product, company, or person is and their value.

In the situation that i am describing the premise is it is right and good to have the dialogue

I've never heard of that before....good to know. So yes, I understood it differently.

A lot of folk favor a 10% rate of taxis ... except of course the rich and powerful as they consider themselves not of onus ... thus ominous nature of the autonomous as you are not supposed to speak of such things in the company of the rich and famous or those that would like to be leaving folk like me cinque ante ...

With the powers it just doesn't carry well and they cannot see any consequence of the poor supporting the other end ... nonetheless it is terminal!

We give monthly to Medecins sans Frontiers, Casa Pueblito (a charity supporting education and community services in Central America), and our church. We give cash to the Food Bank when they are at community events. I also give them fresh produce from our garden at times. A few weeks ago it was hot peppers and swiss chard. Next week I plan to give them the last of our kale if it is still good as we go to Costa Rica the next week. We give cash donations at times in the moment.
