I eat too many sweets….usually home made desserts. Lately it is zucchini chocolate cake or oatmeal cookies. If I ate meals as delicious as @BetteTheRed makes, maybe I wouldn’t crave sweets. And maybe if baking wasn’t a hobby….

Me too Nancy, and most of the sweets I eat aren't homemade. I guess some of us just have a sweet tooth more than others.

Conversation today between my Neurologist and I...

Doctor: You should lose weight.

Jae: I am losing weight.

Doctor: Oh, you're trying to lose, that's great.

Jae: No, Doctor, I'm not trying to lose weight. I am losing weight. I'm counting calories.

Doctor: How many every day?

Jae (rounding up): 1900.

Doctor: That's good. That's good

That's excellent advice. The challenge for me is that I live in a food desert

The challenge for me is that I live in a food desert
I did some research and South Korea is far from a food desert as far as I can see.

Breakdown highlighting some of your US-branded/western choices alongside healthy, accessible Korean replacements:

  • The US Choice: Kellogg’s Cranberry Almond Cereal
    • The Korean Replacement: Misutgaru (미숫가루) – A nutrient-dense, high-fibre traditional shake made from roasted whole grains and brown rice mixed into milk.
  • The US Choice: Steak Cheeseburger Combo
    • The Korean Replacement: Convenience Store Dosirak (도시락) – A balanced, pre-made local meal kit featuring lean proteins, brown rice, and fresh vegetables.
  • The US Choice: Sprite Zero
    • The Korean Replacement: Carbonated Water with Hongcho (홍초) – Sparkling water mixed with tart, fermented fruit vinegar for a zero-calorie, probiotic fizz.
  • The US Choice: Campbell's-style Cream of Mushroom Soup
    • The Korean Replacement: Instant Miyeok-guk (미역국)
    • – Low-sodium seaweed soup blocks that are deeply comforting, mineral-rich, and low-calorie.
      Sept 1
    • The Western Choice: Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar & Pokemon Chocolate Roll Cake
      • The Korean Replacement: Roasted Sweet Potato (군고구마) or Roasted Chestnuts (맛밤) – Naturally sweet, fiber-rich whole foods available warm at any convenience store counter.
      • The Western Choice: Gong Cha Toowoomba Sausage Burrito
        • The Korean Replacement: Triangle Kimbap (삼각김밥) – Opt for the Jeonju Bibimbap or Tuna Mayo flavors wrapped in crisp seaweed for a lower-calorie, authentic local grab-and-go lunch.
      • ☕ The Western Choice: Double Gong Cha Espresso Lattes
        • The Korean Replacement: Iced Americano ("Ah-Ah") or Barley Tea (보리차) – Swapping heavy, milk-based lattes for standard espresso or zero-calorie roasted grain tea cuts down on daily sugar and dairy bloat.
      • The Western Choice: Processed Pork Dinner & Denmark Berry Yogurt Drink
        • The Korean Replacement: Boiled Egg Cup (감동란) & Plain Unsweetened Yogurt – Keeping the fresh kimchi and white rice is great, but pairing them with clean convenience-store proteins and zero-sugar dairy reduces the processed sodium and hidden sugars.

That's complex for those searching simplicity ... parsimony? Moni gain in royalty, church and governing leadership ... bad vessels ... depend on roots and Rhodes ... as source identifications ... messed-dupe ...

When I say that I'm living in a food desert, I mean my own neighbourhood - not the entire nation of South Korea!
