So, another prime minister from my youth (relatively speaking) has passed away. Brian Mulroney occupied 24 Sussex from 1984-1993, bringing the Progressive Conservatives back into power after a string of Liberal governments, including the long run of the current PM's father, that had previously only been broken by the short-lived Joe Clark government. His family have kept the Mulroney name in the news, too, with his son becoming a TV host and his daughter following Brian into politics. His run as PM had its triumphs and controversies and will likely be discussed for years to come. His biggest legacy, free trade with the US, is still with us.

RIP, Brian Mulroney.

For perspective, Mulroney became PM the year I graduated high school and started my bachelor's degree. By the time of his resignation, I was married and had been working for about 3 years. So, really, the last PM of my "youth".

My children were born in the Mulroney era. I was a little older than university age :)

Can a politician rest in peace given the dissonance they 've been the cause of? This goes in all vectors ... Eris; that is ...

I was critiqued for the word (Eris) as the English Professor (in company) was unused to the understanding of the word thereof ... thus I dismissed myself ... and so it goes ... often unattended like powerful flaming's; effy's ... Ge'ez! Ephraim of γ (rhos; 've Greek) that are often confused with ν (Greek NU's) gathered thy may be taken as a Rousse and thus a rub is given ... is that a message on Ares ? Late Night on Air? humph ... that's dark ...

What do normal folk understand? If they do; is it a myth est? Rather purple and brusque ... now there's a word for interest bru'! Ya'll know about esque, right? Actually ... not quite ... because the deeper I get into the field of logo ... the thicker and denser it get ... folk just don't accept knowing and intellect that well ... and psyche goes down! Precious lime in the well? Slick ...

All my children were born during his time as prime minister. Another legacy was ending the hidden manufacturer's tax and replacing it with the GST. Chretien and Harper reducing it to 5% was a mistake.

Mulroney actually accomplished a lot in his eight years. It is too bad it kind ended on a sour note with the Schreiber affair but that seems to have been left behind. He was a much stronger leader and better statesman than any of the leaders the current CPC has put forward. I didn't agree with all of his policies, but I had some respect for the man. Saw him in person once during a tour of Parliament when he was Opposition Leader but he was in a scrum so there was no interaction.

Yeah, there was the Merch lake accord that failed to include indigenous peoples, getting Nelson Mandala out of prison by rallying all the nations, and supporting the elimination of acid rain in our lakes by creating the Eastern Canada acid rain Program with Bush.

I checked the dates…All three of our kids were born in the Mulroney era too. I’ll have to tell them because I don’t know that they know much about him.

I suspect mine mostly knows about Mulroney from us and his interest in politics. He was born well after Brian left office.

My two youngest were born in the Mulroney years. The oldest might remember a bit; will have to ask him tomorrow when he calls.

I was a kid during his time in office. I knew nothing about politics. I just remember thinking Mila was stylish and attractive on TV, like a model, and he wasn’t so much. Like, an odd couple. Shallow of me, I know. (Turns out that’s not uncommon pairing anyway - look South.) Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe nobody else thought that. Or maybe one of my parents or friends’ parents made the observation out loud when the news was on, and I’m remembering it. Not sure.

That’s literally the extent of what passed through my mind, briefly. Maybe I shouldn’t mention it but I just spent 10 minutes on this post, so I’ll keep it.

I didn’t understand the substance of the issues of the time. I just saw the photo-ops and had that passing thought. I’ve been reading he was a statesman who put politics aside for his friends. He was a trustworthy advisor. That’s good. He was moderate - not extreme conservative. He was respected by those who knew and loved him. Even his political opponents. His family will miss him dearly. RIP

Hmm, Kimmio, did you not get the equation, early, that what makes a man alpha is power, what makes a female alpha is appearance? So, I've never really remarked on an inequality of appearance between couples.

Mulroney wasn't a terrible guy. Free Trade with the U.S. may or may not turn out to have been a great idea, but it was his and he got it through. I have some admiration for politicians who have a big idea and get it through. Like Tommy Douglas and the CCF and healthcare. Like Bill Davis and the Ontario Conservatives and the community college system. I hope like Rajeet Singh and Justin Trudeau if they manage to get pharmacare written into the Canada Health Act.

And Brian graciously did not gift his daughter Caroline with his rather impressive lower jaw, LOL.

Lanterns are out there for hanging ... with a litlle light it is amazing to see what goes on on the street corners ... Kristofferson sang about the come down!

It was a Sunday morning item ... an enigma hanging over? Stunning ...

Details of the state funeral (given he's a former PM, he gets one) on March 23 are out. Venue is Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal with the archbishop and rector officiating. Multiple guests will be speaking including (for some reason) Wayne Gretzky. Caroline Mulroney (the daughter who is now an Ontario cabinet minister), Pierre Karl Peladeau (one of his business connections), Jean Charest (who served in Mulroney's last government and later as premier of Quebec), and former US Secretary of State James Baker (who worked in both the Reagan and Bush administrations during the Mulroney era) are also speaking. All will be televised and livestreamed I assume but I haven't seen details.

the Chariman of Quebecor has moved on?
he i think was the first "mesa chin" in my life

and i still remember that whole NAFTA kerfuffle...when we had the referendum, all that yakking over what Yes and No meant lol

There wasn't one on free trade, was there? Or did BC have one? The one I remember was on constitutional reform, aka the Charlottetown Accord.
